Motivational Mondays…The Two Sides of Giving

We’re all familiar with the many sayings and quotes that remind us of the benefits of giving to others. And they’re true…we’ve all experienced the inner joy we get when we give of ourselves to others.

When you think about it, there are two sides of giving.

There is a special person Larry and I’ve met while on our daily walks. His name is Greg and he has many responsibilities at Kickerillo-Mischer Preserve where we walk.

He’s a good ole’ Texas boy.  If he sees something that needs to be done, he does it. The “not my job” saying is not in his vocabulary.

Greg continues to move up the ladder and take on more responsibilities.

When we gave Greg some Christmas goodies (homemade cookies and homemade holiday carrot-raisin cake),  he shared most of it with his crew.

He is always willing to share his knowledge and time with his co-workers, encouraging them to get certain certifications so that they too can move up.

Greg has what I like to call the Giving Gene.

Recently when he was returning to the staff building, he brought back sandwiches for anyone who happened to be around. Since they were on sale he bought well over a dozen.

Kindness in words creates confidence. Kindness in thinking creates profoundness. Kindness in giving creates love.
Lao Tzu

The Other Side of Giving

When Greg returned with the sandwiches he laid them on the table and offered one to the newest crew member, Dave.

Dave was taken aback that anyone would do this for him. He graciously accepted the sandwich.

Larry and I also gave Dave the same Christmas cookies and cake as we had Greg.  He seemed in disbelief that someone would give him something like this for no reason.

I was struck by these two sides of giving. Greg has the kind of joy we talk about when you give to others. It is who he is.

And Dave, who, in being the recipient of Greg’s generosity, had his eyes opened to the world of giving as well as receiving. He was touched that someone, for no reason, would do something nice for him.

Giving to others is not a one-time event. When you give, you create a ripple effect. Who knows…your generosity may open the eyes of someone and waken them to the act of giving.

And your kind act also lets the recipient know that he is someone worth giving to.

The Dead Sea in the Middle East receives fresh water, but it has no outlet, so it doesn’t pass the water out.
It receives beautiful water from the rivers, and the water goes dank. I mean, it just goes bad.
And that’s why it is the Dead Sea. It receives and does not give. In the end generosity is the best way of becoming more, more, and more joyful.

Hello Kathy - for me, I see examples in your post of how things (and thoughts too) are interconnected (plus interrelated).  Digging deeper we may find additional insight.  Perhaps a treasure.

Good morning Kathy,

I love your post this morning! Greg is a natural giver (just like you and Larry) and by his joy of giving he just opened Dave's eyes and taught him a valuable trait that I can see him passing it on!

I find that folks from the Northeast are more suspicious of others. They are less likely to give and (generally) harder nuts to crack. When they move south (to say Texas) they simply cannot believe how nice (and giving) people are. Good story. I wonder if Dave is from the Northeast...lol

Jeffrey DiMuria 321.223.6253 Waves Realty I noticed that when we first moved to FL and so did all of our visitors. I'd say good morning to someone (from up east) and they'd look at me as if I were nuts. I'm not sure where Dave is from...he's very nice and smart as well.

There is a book called "Givers Gain" about how networking is a gain for both sides. Then the book "The Giver" is another perspective. Your posting about Gene emulates what is between the pages of those two books.
