Tuesdays Treasures…Cooking With Julia

Not THAT Julia! Mini-me wanted to spend time with me decorating a cake, so that is what we did this weekend.

Because it’s easier to frost a cake after it’s been in the fridge for a few hours or overnight, I made the cake the day before. All that was left to do was make the frosting and decorate it!! We made a batch of brownies and frosted them as well!

Mini-me loves to be creative whether it’s in her drawing or making jewelry. I was excited to bake with her to pass on the tips I’d learned from my grandmother and mother.

I remember watching my grandmother make pies without even looking at a recipe. She could make 3 or 4 at a time.

When I asked “How much of an ingredient to use” she couldn’t tell me. It was “Oh…about this much.”

Mini-me was surprised when I told her we were making the frosting because just as many kids today, she was used to frosting coming out of a can!

The finished product was the most festive cake I’ve ever seen!!!

Next she wants to make beer bread with Uncle Larry.  There will be no tasting of the ingredients until after the bread is done!

Cooking with kids is not just about ingredients, recipes, and cooking. It's about harnessing imagination, empowerment, and creativity.

Good morning Kathy. Seeing your title brought visions of Julia Child to mind. And you mention of what amount to use brought back memories of my late mother-in-law who never knew how mush to use but always used the right amount. So now Julia knows not all frosting comes out of a can. On to beer bread with Larry. Enjoy baking and decorating together.

Wayne Martin I still watch old cooking shows from Julia Child. Julia seems to be interested in cooking so I hope I can pass what I have learned on to her.

Hannah Williams when she comes to visit, she loves to draw and work on "crafty" projects. Since she loves to decorate, Larry and I told her that we'll bake the sugar cookies as long as she decorates them.
