They Will Never Know . . .

By

So, there I was, watching an episode of "Cheers" on Paramount+. And I caught something. I realized just how fast our culture moves and changes. How fast we lose our perspective. How fast people and terms fall out of usage and knowledge.

They used the term "Siskel & Ebert" to define someone as a film critic. I wondered just how few 20 year-olds would understand that term. Or would they realize who Tip O'Neil or Gary Hart were. Would they understand why dinner always took hours to prepare in "The Brady Bunch"? Or why car seats weren't in their station wagon?

Even in episodes of the original "Frasier", the first few seasons had no cell phones.  Does that blow the mind of teenagers that you had to rush home to get a call?

My parents were real estate brokers in the 60s through to the 2010's. I remember in the 70s.  We had something extremely high tech. No, it wasn't a cell phone.  It was a 2 way radio (just like the police cars of the day had. That way, the office could instantly relay a message to my folks about a sale or a listing.

There is so much that I take for granted in my memories and yet for those in their 20s or maybe 30s . . . they will never know.

Hello Rocky - looking back at life, not that long ago, can be eye-opening when searching for clues to connect time, place, people and things around.  Is it all technology-related?  That's a big part but there's more to it than that.  It's interesting to see how art and culture surrounding it reflects living.

Good morning Rocky. My first sponsoring broker did not belong to a MLS and did not share her listings with her associates. The big advance in the business my first year was a competitor office holding courtesy keys. Oh have the times changed. Thanks for the memories. Enjoy your day.

Those were the great times Rocky. We didn't have as much technology but we also didn't have so many distractions that lead to a lot of social life too

You definitely watch a lot more tv than I do, haha.  I always enjoyed watching Cheers, but I have not seen an episode in many years.

So many things that are just taken as normal were completely foreign back in the 80's. Print anything was king.

We walk around with our office/encyclopedia/weather forecaster/news provider/communications device in our pocket now. Having a phone on the wall that couldn't be answered during dinner and you'd never know who called - how times have changed.

I love this, Rocky and you are so right. I was an agent for one year back in the late 80s. Only executives had cell phones. We had pagers. If you got paged with a "1" that meant contact the office ASAP!

As others have written, so true.  Not all change is better than what was before, just different. For what we may gain, we also may lose.  So sad to see people out at restaurants eating dinner and on their phones not conversing with each other.

I can remember when 2-way radios were very hot items. Almost all truckers had them. We rented a motor home once and it had one. It was great fun.

Good morning Rocky,

I love your post and so glad that Kathy Streib featured it in her "Ah-Ha" moments for the week, as I missed it! Your observations are spot on...technology has really changed the way we live and communicate! No cell phones when I started real estate and I had lots of quarters in my car to stop and use the phone (they were everywhere).

💯

I was just gonna say the same thing . . . technology and advancement has blessed us, but also cost us in terms of critical thinking and so many other things.

OUR generation is the ONLY one to have known both analog and digital life. I'm grateful to be a Boomer! OKAY?  LOL

I too am grateful for being a Baby Boomer as well.  My other thought is "great minds think alike."😉

I think it's scary that technology has done away with learning. No one needs to learn cursive writing, because no one writes?? Kids no longer learn to tell time on a clock because their cell phones tell them the time. And why learn to spell when spell-check will do it for you? (Never mind if it gets the wrong word, at least it will be spelled correctly!)

Meanwhile, a lot of people think I'm insane because I don't own a smart phone. There is no cell service in our valley and no one I urgently need to speak with when I go to the grocery store. I don't need one.

This is so true, rotary phones, party lines, pagers, palm pilots, and soon cursive will be obsolete too.

They may actually never know, but you will and you’ll understand that knowledge better than I am able to express.
