Missing or incorrect form W-2 or 1099, what to do?

What To Do When You Don't Get Your W2 or it’s wrong🙀‼️

Have you ever been expecting your W-2 and it never arrives? This can be a scary feeling, and it's important to know what your next steps should be in this situation. Here are some tips you should follow if you don't get your W2.

January 31- If your Form W-2 or 1099 Is not received by January 31, 2024, or if your information is incorrect on these forms.

Contact Your Employer or Payor - The first thing you should do is contact your employer or payor. They may have a record of the form being sent, or they might have sent it to the wrong address. Make sure to double-check any addresses that were provided so that you can be sure there was no error on the sender's part.

February 28-If you haven't received the missing or corrected form by the end of February, you may call the IRS at 800-829-1040 for assistance.

When calling, please have the following information:

  • Your name, address (including ZIP code), phone number, taxpayer identification number, and dates of employment,
  • Your employer/payer's name, address (including ZIP code), and phone number.

The IRS will try to contact the employer/payer for you and request the missing or corrected form. The IRS will also send you a Form 4852, Substitute for W-2

Still can’t get your form W-2/1099-If you don't receive the missing or corrected form in time to file your tax return, Estimate your income and withholding and prepare substitute W-2 or 1099R with Form 4852 to complete your return. Estimate your wages or the payments made to you and any taxes withheld and report them on Form 4852.

File for an Extension - If you cannot obtain your W2 from your employer, then you could also file for an extension with the IRS. This can be done online or by mail. The extension is only of time to file. If you think you will owe, you must pay the tax with the extension.

File an Amended Return - If you receive the missing or corrected Form W-2 or Form 1099-R after you file your return and the information differs from your estimates, you must file an amended return using Form 1040X.

Keep Records- when you are paid you should keep track of the payments you received. Generally, a paystub or a copy of the check you received or a written record of the payments you received. Having these records handy can help if there are ever any discrepancies down the road.

No 1099 Misc 0r 1099 NEC-you can estimate your income based on bank deposits or checks you received to report your income.

Most employer or payors are like you.

but sometimes people move and don’t receive them or the business closes before they get sent out
