Forrest Gump Had a Special Wisdom, Monday Musings

We are still doing the vacation thing and for a break, pulled into a rest stop in Savannah. Imagine our surprise to see Forrest Gump seated in the lobby. We stopped to have a talk with him, and it was quite interesting to say the least.

The movie was described as Forrest growing up in Alabama, and while some of the movie was filmed there, the majority of the film was shot in South Carolina and Georgia.

The famous bench scene, where Forrest recounts his life story to anybody that would sit with him most of the movie was shot in Savannah's Chippewa Square, which still gets a lot of attention from tourists.

Forrest was a very profound individual as was his Mama and he gave us some of his best advise while we sat on the bench with him.

"There’s an awful lot you can tell about a person by their shoes.” – Forrest Gump.

"You have to do the best with what God gave you.” – Forrest Gump.

“Life is like a box of chocolates; you never know what you’re gonna get.” – Forrest Gump.

“There’s only so much fortune a man really needs, and the rest is just for showin’ off.” –Forrest Gump

"Mama always said ,dying was just a part of life."  -Forrest Gump

Not to be outdone my wife felt the need to get an opportunity to discuss the issues of life with Forrest as well.

We chatted for a bit, although Forrest was not as talkative as one might have believed him to be.

I guess if you sit on a bench as long as he has, one does get tired of the attention after a while.

Ww left him and continued our drive south but have the memory of his presence even though he didn't offer us a piece of chocolate, which was rude considering how close to Valentine's Day we are.

Ed that is neat.  There wasn't a mannequin of Forrest Gump on a bench the times I have in in Savannah.  We took a trolley tore of Savannah's 14 squares, and it was mentioned that the actual bench Forrest Gump sat on is no long there because people kept on chipping away at it.

Dennis Neal   Thanks for taking the time to stop.

George Souto   Savannah is a nice town, and they offer a lot to residents and visitors alike. This was a teaser at the welcome center.

Hi Ed- thank you for this cute post about Forrest Gump. He was a person of few words, so I'd imagine that if he did not speak to you or to your wife, he'd used all of his words up.

Ed Silva, 203-206-0754 - I love this post and your humor too! What a special moment the two of you had sitting next to Forrest Gump and reminiscing about all his sprinkled words of wisdom. Who would have thought, a box of chocolates would be so motivating for life! I'll bet growing up as a kid, Tom Hanks never dreamed about how important he would be as an Actor just sitting on a bench with a box of chocolates. And now, he is memorialized for playing that role of Forrest Gump. No matter what role we play, we need to remember our values and lessons learned, even if they are just from "mama!"

Happy belated Valentine's Day. Have fun on your journey!
