Shrove Tuesday/Mardi Gras 2024 in the United States

First, yesterday was Fat Tuesday (Shrove Tuesday), and is the day before the Lental season. This is the end of Mardi Gras where lavish festivities and foods are enjoyed before the 40-day season of Lent.

 

 

Second: The last time both Ash Wednesday and Valentine's Day fell on Valentine's Day was in 2018.

Ash Wednesday's underpinning is based on morality, repentance, and preparation for Easter. 

  • Mortality:  "...For you are dust and to dust you will return." Humanity is fragile and each one of us is here temporarily.
  • Repentance: We confess, seek forgiveness, and turn away from our sins (repent).
  • Preparation for Easter: The Lental season of 40 days is to prepare ourselves for Easter and emphasizes our journey to redemption and renewal. It is also a reminder of the Christ's sacrifice.

Good morning Doug,

I read in KAREN SANCHEZ posts yesterday that pancakes were eaten on Shrove Tuesday...I have never heard of that. I didn't know the last time Valentine's Day fell on Ash Wednesday was in 2018 so learned something new today! Happy Valentines Day!!

Thank you, Doug for the refresher post on Ash Wednesday. I remember when I was in Sunday School. I must have been maybe 7 or so when Lent came around and instead of giving up something for Lent, we had a cardboard folder with slots/spaces to put, if I remember, dimes in for each day of Lent.

Doug Dawes - you are absolutely right. It is a "conscious decision." You can't make family members, friends, or anyone else go to church or believe, just because you think they need to practice their faith. But isn't it interesting, in desperate situations and emergency, many will return and pray.
