What is love?

Yes, here we are on Valentine's Day again, it feels a little like Groundhog Day, it just keeps coming round and round. But, have you ever really considered what is love?

Love is an emotion, sure, but we use the word loosely. We love our parents, our lover, our spouse, our kids, our grandkids, our pets, our cars, our home, our favorite food, our favorite book or movie, even our jobs.

Do we love them all in the same way? Certainly not, but we use the same word, love.

Certain songs move us, that we say, I love this song. Here is a Youtube list of love songs from the 70's, 80's and 90's

When it comes to people, we may love conditionally or unconditionally, it all depends on how we were loved or not by parents. Some people may have anger rather than love for parents they felt did not love them. I know I was loved, by both my father and mother, I was very lucky. I loved my sons as they grew up and challenged authority and got into trouble some times. Overall we came through it all.

Then there is the one you commit your life and your love to, a spouse, and all is great till it isn't, either health wise or emotionally and a divorce results. And then if you are really lucky you find someone else to love you and to love.

Loving a house is not so dramatic, people fall in love with a house and purchase it, they make changes, decorate, paint, buy antiques, furniture, paintings etc., to turn it into a home. They create a garden, planting shrubs, flowers and trees to create a special place, a bench where they can sit and enjoy what they have created, enjoying nature around them.

If you are looking for a house to make a home, I can help, I understand the challenges in finding the right place, it can take time and be something of a challenge sometimes. But, at the right time the right place comes along and you fall in love and can move in and start your journey.

Maybe, it is time to let go of that place you have called home and loved for a long time, making it your own. I understand how hard that can be, letting go, especially if you are now alone after a long journey together with a partner.

Hi Nick,
I don't use the word "love" as freely as some people. However, you're right in that we love in different ways depending on who or what it is and how they (or it) fits into our life.  I knew I loved my husband, but when he was ill I remember being totally content in taking care of him. To me, that's the highest degree of love.

I don't love my house, but I am very comfortable in it. We bought it for a specific purpose, which it served.  It continues to be very functional for me and (best of all) paid for. I might move someday, but I'm not in any particular hurry.

Hello Nick - finding love can be difficult.  Regardless of situation.  That can certainly make it harder to define.  You have nicely expressed the nuances as well as the range of this vital emotion.  Happy Valentine's Day. Belatedly.

Nick Vandekar, 610-203-4543 - I've been picky when I use the word love because in many cases, people use the word love out of context. However, sometimes, I slip and say it anyway. But one thing I agree with is that we all need to love fully the people in our lives that are the most important and we couldn't find ourselves living without.

Happy belated Valentine's Day to you and your wife.

Good morning Nick. Another example of your creative mind providing a pondering moment. Thanks! I use "Like" freely but reserve "Love" too very few. Enjoy your day.
