A few thoughts late on Friday evening - golf

Real Estate Agent with HomeSmart Real Estate AZ Broker BR030809000

The Phoenix Open used to be a golf tournament that I used to love to attend and spend quality time with friends and business associates for many years.  Those days are long gone. I haven't been in quite a few years and have no plans to attend in the future - for a reason.

Gary went one day this week and both he and his friends were totally disgusted with the outrageous behavior of a lot of the attendees.  They decided to leave early, not only because it was raining but because of all the craziness going on.

The local media has been covering this crazy story and the down right disgrace of a show it's become for our community. I heard a short clip from the President of the Thunderbird's yesterday (the group that runs the tournament) and he stated they were well aware that things needed to change.  Duh!  Well, they've got a year to shift this tournament back into a respectable one or they are going to lose even more fans. Guaranteed.

I don't even want to talk about the crazy stuff I've seen reported on - there is just no reason for this show of stupidity and drunken behavior. I just don't get it.  Maybe I'm an old fart.  Maybe I've always been an old fart.  Whatever.  I'm done with even watching it if they don't clean up their act.  No thanks! End of rant that I wanted to write all week!

Now - back to the beautiful scene from our back patio and to enjoy time with friends on this lovely Friday evening. The good news - it's back in the 70's and sunny and that makes me very happy!

Enjoy your weekend!  That's what I'll be doing!!

Hello Anna - sometimes it feels good to channel the saying, "not my circus, not my monkeys".  It doesn't mean the situation goes away, but it needn't take up any real estate in your brain.   May your Presidents' Day Weekend be enjoyed.  🍌🌵🍌

Agreed Michael Jacobs that is where I normally go to.  This is a little more personal as it's in our backyard here in the Metro area and it's just put a taint on the whole tournament. I'm all for stating my views, hope somebody reads it and DOES something to change course!  Enjoy your weekend as well!! 😊

That's an amazing landscape, Anna.  I'm not a golfer, but wouldn't mind hanging out at that spot. . .Sans any drama.

Exactly Myrl Jeffcoat it used to be so serene and peaceful.  Sure there were a lot of folks but not crazy ones like it is now.  They've turned it into one big party.  That's not golf to me.

Anna "Banana" Kruchten  when I was 3 years old my dad used to call me the Old Man... I was always about proper behavior, in restaurants or just out in public... we would go every Sunday to this famous/fancy restaurant in Gyoer, Hungary and I used to get uphauled at the bad behavior of older kids and their parents...Endre

A little 3 year old Endre Barath, Jr. uphauling older kids!  Now I'd love to see that! Good boy!  I wouldn't suggest you try going to the PHX Open as you'd be uphauling constantly.  Sad really.

Hi Anna,
The Phoenix Open HAS gotten crazy. The players are pretty disenchanted with that particular event too. It will be interesting to see what field of players they can get next year. We can't be an "anything goes" society.

Our Apple Blossom Festival got crazy in the 70's. They cracked down with a major law enforcement presence. We still have huge crowds but not the unruly craziness that was going on before.

Hi Carol Williams - the players are disenchanted with the OPEN and I'm hoping some of them chose not to play here until they straighten out this mess.  The Thunderbirds did such a great job of managing this event for so long but they let it get WAY out of control.  Pulling it back in isn't going to be an easy job but it needs to be done.

For golf enthusiasts, the Phoenix Open is not very enjoyable.  I remember trying to follow my friend who was playing in the tournament and it was a hassle.  It is more of a party these days with a little bit of golf being played.  It has definitely gotten out of control.  I went on Wednesday and it was not enjoyable at all, they haven't done a good job with the crowds, the traffic, the parking, etc.  They definitely need an overhaul, haha.

Feb 17, 2024 04:48 AM
Anna "Banana" Kruchten

Yup Brian England it has become way more of a party than a golf event.  Was it raining on Wednesday?   Gary ran into rain on Thursday which made things worse.

Yes, it was raining on top of already being a big hassle, haha.

That's so unfortunate to hear what's happening with what used to be a fun and peaceful event. I did do a quick internet search to see what's going on and saw a few recent videos. The event coordinators need to make some changes!

And I'm glad you were joining friends and the great outdoors!! :-)

Feb 17, 2024 05:17 AM

I have zero desire to see anymore crazy a** videos of stupid people at that event.  Far too many of them!  I'm glad you did so you get an idea of what I'm talking about Kat Palmiotti . Hard to imagine unless you actually see it.  People might think you're making this up.  Sadly I'm not and many of us feel the same way.

The decline of our culture continues to be reflected in such events. These days I will attend local rodeo events because the culture is still respectful. I was brought up to be respectful in public and that seems to be fading away like a Arizona sunset.

Feb 17, 2024 05:22 AM
Anna "Banana" Kruchten

Golf was the last standout or so it seemed for awhile Leanne Smith . And honestly The Open has, by far, the most outrageous behavior being allowed and they let it escalate year after year.   I am hoping the Thunderbirds can bring it back.  Not holding a lot of faith in that just yet.....but it could happen if they got determined.

Good morning Anna,

Its such a shame that the Phoenix Open has now turned out to be a a debacle. Hopefully the group in charge can turn it around but they are going to have to get tough with offenders if it's going to get close to being back to what it was.

That's my thought exactly Dorie Dillard Austin TX . The Thunderbirds could turn it around but can they and will they?  I sure hope so.

While I have NO idea of the kinds of things that are happening, it causes me to ponder who/what is behind it. Bad things don't just start happening at venues like that.  Why was it tolerated when it first started happening? Why is it allowed to continue?

I do not watch golf - never have.  Yet I do love the beauty and serenity golf courses offer, sans any 💩💩💩 behavior that make take place on them.

Feb 17, 2024 07:25 AM

Hi Kathleen Daniels, Probate & Trust Specialist it started quite awhile ago on the 16th hole and spread from there.  Spectators, year after year got more and more outrageous & ridiculous and I'd say the last 5 to 8 years it's escalated to the freak show it was this year.

I love golf and enjoy watching as well as playing.  Looking forward to being able to play again hopefully this year.  And I've lived on several golf courses and the beauty and serenity is so so nice!

Those idiots may have ruined it for the area as the pros didn't like it ether and they have options to not attend a featured event, it may be a sparse competition next year. The PGA is also going to make recommendations as well.

Anna "Banana" Kruchten

Hi Ed Silva, 203-206-0754 you know for sure what I'm talking about. I just shake my head when I see this stuff on TV now - it's so over the top nuts.  If I were a player I would not want to be playing in this tournament.  I hadn't heard the PGA was going to make 'recommendations'. I just hope what is recommended is followed - and then some!

Hello Anna and I am upset with lots of sports and what happens.   You have me wondering how bad it was.  I use to go to some golf events in Ohio back in the 80's but not sure now.

Feb 17, 2024 07:33 AM
Anna "Banana" Kruchten

Will Hamm  this golf event even back in the  early 2000's or so used to be enjoyable and not so over the top crazy nuts.  Most golf events are NOT like the Phoenix Open.  This one is so over the top out of control it's hard to believe they let it happen - to a golf event.  Go figure?

Anna many events are no longer about the event, but about all the surrounding things going on.  The Super Bowl this year was a good example of that.

Feb 17, 2024 08:17 AM
Anna "Banana" Kruchten

I'd say your right George Souto - but the Open takes the Grand Prize for how not to host an event.  Think of the worst 'frat party' and you'll get the picture of how bad it is.

Anna "Banana" Kruchten - Unruly behavior is out of control. I was reading what I thought would be an insightful article yesterday, but was turned off instantly because of snarky remarks by journalists and the media. Not only did I forget what I was reading about something interesting, I don't understand why so many people grow up to be the judge and jury of other people. It is all about their opinions and belief that they are right and so they wag their fingers, tongues, and remarks around like cotton seeds that just keeps germinating and spreading out all over the land.

There was an old European saying my parents and neighbors always said to children when they were critical or expressed bad words - you keep a you mouth shut!

Mar 04, 2024 04:52 AM
Anna "Banana" Kruchten

In this situation is wasn't as much the media but rather the locals and folks from out of town that were not happy with what this event has turned into. If they don't 'shift' by next year people will stay away - we will for sure. So over the top not ok....
