Philadelphia Steals and Deals Mattress Shopping Part one

Real Estate Agent with HomeStarr Realty RS143922A

I went shopping for a mattress as I promised  Mike McCann Nebraska Land Broker  . I chose it as my furniture dealer as I knew they would have almost all the internet and High models in stock and on the showroom floor. Plus, they were the company I would most likely buy from, as I like their company service and policy.

Philadelphia Steals and Deals Mattress Shopping Part one

I asked for a salesman I had purchased furniture from before, but my mind went blank. I need help remembering his name. A nice young salesman looked him up for me, and he was there. He was finishing up with a lovely young couple, so I started looking around. There were rooms and rooms full of mattresses. There was another lady, and we looked at each other and said oh my goodness, how do you decide?

My salesman came and asked me lots of questions. Was I a side sleeper or a back sleeper? A stomach sleeper? Was price most important or comfort?

I explained I had a large antique brass bed and wanted to be sure the mattress would fit. He said it would be as long as I had a box spring, but I should get a platform instead. I am lying on the bed in this huge store: me, the princess, and the pea. So of course the one I picked is one of the most expensive. I will spend over what I expected to pay when everything is said and done. I told myself this was the last mattress I would ever sleep on. Plus, I am an insomniac, and I've been one since childhood. Dreamland, this will take me there.

Then the salesman made a mistake. When I said you would take my old mattress out, he answered they could refuse if there were any stains. Now I know there were no stains from bodily functions. I can not swear that I had not spilled some coffee when Cleo jumped up on me early in the morning while watching Good Morning America. I looked at him and said I would refuse to accept this purchase. He walked away, came back, and said no worries, they would work it out.

Do I want to schlep a mattress on and off my bed? Nope, not at my age. Nor am I going to pay extra to have someone come and remove it when I am paying top of the line. It is just that I cannot stop wondering how delightful my sleepless nights may become if I purchase this restful mattress. I think this is the one, but I will do more research. Stay tuned for part 2.  Here is a video of Beautyrest  Black Hybrid

Hannah when I purchased a new mattress a few years ago, it was far more expensive than I expected, but I sleep like a baby on it.  It has proven to be worth every penny I spent on it.

George Souto,  I had sticker shock but loved this mattress; I caught a stomach virus a couple of days before the weekend, and it is going around. In the meantime, the salesman called me back. I will try to get over there in the next few days and have an agreement to write  also. Thank you for telling me this makes me feel better

Hannah, Oh MY!   Think I would have walked away.   I bought my mattress at Denver Mattress about 3-4 years ago, and they never asked anything about the mattress, just said there was no fee for removal of the old one.   Hope this mattress helps you sleep.

Hello Hannah Williams, when I purchased my mattress, they told me there would be a fee to remove the existing one, it was a lot cheaper to get it removed by someone else. Looking forward to Part 2!

Beth Atalay They did say no fee with a but. The salesman knew me from before and knew I meant what I said. If they were not taking the mattress I would go elsewhere.

Good afternoon Hannah,

Good for you for getting out there and making a decision! They are far more expensive than you expect but think about how much you use a mattress daily!! It's so worth it to get a good nights sleep! Looking forward to reading Part I!

Dorie Dillard Austin TX  I agree I need a good night's sleep. I was shocked at the prices, but I am not interested in setting up my mattress, unboxing it, and everything else. I was glad George Souto made his comment.

Hannah the last time we bought a mattress it cost way more than we ever imagined but it's been well worth it.  And now, it's time to buy another one so off we'll go one of these days to pick out a new one.  Good luck on your purchase AND getting a good nights sleep which is so worth it.  BTW there were no extra fees for pick up, move and take away previously.  I would think the mattress business is very competitive as there are stores every where - as in every where!

Anna "Banana" Kruchten I caught a stomach bug, so I was stuck in for a few days. Then I did some online research plus my salesman called to tell me he thought he had something I might like. I returned his call and said I would try to come in Monday

Hannah Williams - You get what you pay for. I look at the cost of a mattress as a medical expense (that I can't expense on taxes) a good mattress has good health benefits. Don't the doctors always say, exercise and get plenty of rest?

You owe it to yourself to get pampered and sleep well. In this business, we do so much for somebody else. Our body deserves to rest well so that we can get up and feel refreshed.

Enjoy your new mattress!

Hannah Williams - my last seller wanted to donate her very expensive guest bedroom mattress to Salvation Army but they wouldn't take it because it had a small stain on it. She tried other donation centers, and not one would take it. I guess the moral of the story is, stain me once, stained for life.

Hello Hannah - I can see why this post is the first part of your experience on mattress buying in your Steals and Deals series.  It's part adventure, discovery and your reference to The Princess and the Pea gives it a fairy tale aspect too.

I also remember a post from a few years ago when Patricia Feager, MBA, CRS, GRI,MRP wrote of her mattress issues.  She told us in an AR chilling (sorry for the pun) post about its relevance during a Texas cold weather episode.  Her comment on this post brought back those memories and her statement about health once again underscore it.

Sorry for the long comment.  I look forward to the next edition of your journey.  As an ex-retailer, I know some shopping tales are not a one and done kind of story.

Hannah Williams - the mattress story Michael Jacobs was referring to happened during the February 2021 Texas Freeze. I had a gel mattress. The concept was warm in winter; cool in summer. Well, when we had the Big Freeze, something no one ever experienced before because of the Power Grid, my mattress froze. I woke up spazzing out with freezing cold, nearly died. Felt like I was on a cold concrete slab. It took awhile before I was able to get off that mattress and when my feet hit the floor, my body was shivering in waves. It was very scary. I threw it out.

Hi Hannah,
Most charities won't take mattresses anymore, so I usually try donating to a needy family. As long as the delivery people take the mattress out for the pick-up on the old mattress, I'm good with that.

I buy a new mattress about every 10 years, and it's about time to do so again. I just have to decide what size I want.  I know it's going to cost more than I want to spend but comfort is my primary goal.

Hello Carol Williams,  I just wanted them to take my mattress, especially if I  purchase a top-of-the-line mattress. As Ed Silva, 203-206-0754,  said, they will only dispose of them.

Yes, Hannah Williams
I've had them offer to take my mattress away, but they say they just have to take used mattresses to the dump. It's not legal for them to resell them.

I've always sent a message out through my church, and there is always a family in need. Otherwise they take it to the dump and have to pass that fee on to you.

Good morning Hannah. Removal is often overlooked. Good for you! We purchased a mattress in a box and it is wonderful. That said, we live in a hirise building and had to remove the old mattress ourselves. Then when we got it downstairs had to cut it up for the dumpster or pay a fee. Let's just say I cut it up myself. Enjoy your purchase.
