First world problems... carplay withdrawal?

Real Estate Agent with Jameson Sotheby's International Realty

Yesterday, AT&T experienced a catastrophic crash which took down their entire phone system and those of many of their ancillary companies in major cities nationwide  Other than T-mobile and some Verizon users, most mobile users, nationwide found themselves either without service or with some form of limited service as they woke up.

The crash occurred around 4:00 a.m. CST and it took most of the day to get it under control.  Some were able to figure out a work around, by turning off cell-service and switching to wifi calling.  That is, of course, assuming you were within range of some wifi service.  Can you picture more people than normal rushing to their local starbucks? But it created an interesting new first-world problem.  I'm one of those people that uses Apple Carplay for my navigation system in my car.  And if my cell service is down, my Apple Carplay Navigation wouldn't function.  So suddenly my ability to navigate from showing to showing becomes a little more complicated.
Now, for me, I have T-mobile, so my phone was working... not a problem.  And additionally, my car actually has its own navigation system that I routinely ignore because Apple Carplay's nav is soooo much better.   I know I've come to depend on it, not merely for navigation, but it also handles my hands free cell calls, my in-car music (I don't use the radio, or cd-player anymore), my text messaging.  All of that was down.

Would you be prepared for a first-world problem like that?  Would ya?

Thanks for sharing Alan. We got to figure out a way to prevent such happenings in the future. Hackers are everywhere to disrupt our way of life just for their simple pleasure.

Sham, this morning, AT&T is saying that it was not a cyberattack (nor solar flares as was widely reported) ... it was due to over-expansion on their part.  And their over-expansion affected 911 and other emergency systems nationwide.  It was a big deal.

Hmm, I have Verizon and I didn't really notice anything.  I saw some friends complaining about not having service though.

Good morning Alan. I am out of town and seldom using my phone, so it did not affect me. That said, I was nearly always near usable wifi. Enjoy your day.

If cellphone service goes down and the Internet is still usable, then it would be doable. If both went down at the same time, I'm sure a lot of people would be frazzled/anxious. I do have an atlas in the car for my area, so if the GPS was down I'd still be able to find things although I have to admit it would take longer.

Oddly enough, the internet was still usable, because you're right... I would have been both frazzled and anxious if it had been down, too.

It was an interesting day yesterday Alan with the cell phone issues! Our broker sent an email out with the work around so most of us didn't notice it. It could have been a big deal but I was in the office yesterday so just was connected to their wi-fi! It was margarita day yesterday and I loved the pun put up at El Arroyo's bill board!

I had not thought about navigation being down, those old map books look awfully good right now.

Those old map books never looked good.  I'm stunned I never got into an accident folding and unfolding those damnable pages.

The one thing my car didn't have included when I bought it used was GPS.  I use Google Maps on my phone as needed, and I'm a dinosaur, I still keep a stack of CDs on the passenger seat for long road trips, or when the talk show on the radio goes down an alley I don't want to listen to.

We already knew that you were a dinosaur.  But a very techy dinosaur.

I would hardly call it a first world problem, so much as a throwback to the early 1980's Remember wall mounted phones and road maps?

You mean those cell phones with tails that connected them to the wall?

Alan- I did take my years as a Girl Scout pretty seriously so we always have a road atlas and map in the car. (and I can still sing the brownie song) I have Verizon so no issues for me.

I used to keep a 3" thick Chicago Streetfinder book in the car, that somehow I used during showings It was heavy and cumbersome and it's amazing it didn't cause an accident on its own.

(and I remember my ex-wife singing that song with my girls, too).
