This Week…Anticipation

The first word that popped into my mind when thinking about this week was “anticipation.”

Wisdom consists of the anticipation of consequences. Norman Cousins

My sister-in-law’s mother was in the hospital for almost two weeks. Thankfully she was released on Thursday. Until then, we tried to anticipate when she might return home and what care she would need.

People don't realize that now is all there ever is; there is no past or future except as memory or anticipation in your mind. Eckhart Tolle

Larry and I have been eagerly anticipating the beginning of the nesting season. There has been a lot of bluebird activity at our box at home.

We have one bird box in our backyard…and pairs of bluebirds, chickadees, and sparrows fighting over it. It’s similar to the housing feeding frenzy of years past with buyers swarming over every listing.

A great source of calamity lies in regret and anticipation; therefore a person is wise who thinks of the present alone, regardless of the past or future. Oliver Goldsmith

As a child, I remember the joy of anticipating the holidays or the start (or ending) of a school year)...and waiting in anticipation for that special someone to call.

There is no terror in the bang, only
in the anticipation of it.

Alfred Hitchcock

Anticipation helps keep hope alive.

Have a wonderful weekend.

Hitchcock  TV shows scared me so much as a child that my Mother had to take me to the doctor as I was afraid to go to sleep for fear I would wake up old. The DR had to give me a mild sedative

Interesting that we were just talking about 'anticipation' and what a wonderful gift it is to each of us! Expecting, looking forward to, creating anew- all those upbeat words for describing 'forward motion' in many different ways.  This is a great post for pondering and Michael Jacobs adds to it - the way they move my thoughts. Perfect!  Moving ones thoughts in a positive direction...

Hi Anna "Banana" Kruchten hope and anticipation go hand in hand. If you think about it, the world would be a sad place without either of them.

Hi Kathy,
Now IS all we have and, yet, anticipation plays such a big part in our lives. I'm going off in a little different direction, but your post reminds me of one of my philosophies in life: We must balance planning for the future and living today. Tomorrow isn't guaranteed, but we must be prepared for it when it arrives. We can't sacrifice today in anticipation of tomorrow nor sacrifice tomorrow for today.

I agree with you Carol Williams If you to too far...waiting for what might come, you'll miss out on the best part of life...which is now!!

Hi Kathy:

It seems there is almost always something to anticipate in life, and sometimes with unexpected consequences and timing.

I hadn't heard Hitchcock's quote before but it's right on target!

too much anticipation at holidays, elections, wars, etc.  Hitchcock was right.  for me more dread than joy.  interesting to think about that. thank you, Kathy!
