If you are a fan of true crime, specifically of serial killers, this is a must-read book for you.

Terror in Ypsilanti John Norman Collins Unmasked by Gregory A. Fournier

 a book review.

As a bit of background, I seldom read non-fiction books. That said, this book was gifted to me by one of Diane’s Goodreads online reader friends, a woman who hails from Michigan and who knew that I attended Eastern Michigan University (EMU) for two semesters from 1972-1973.  While I was waiting for my US Citizenship papers and subsequently hearing whether I would be accepted into the U.S. Air Force Academy or the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, I chose to go to EMU on a scholarship and grants rather than hang around my parents' house.  Yes, I was always up for an adventure back then!

When I arrived as a newbie freshman in a co-ed dorm in Ypsilanti, MI, I clearly remember the talk of the dorm being about the Serial Killer who prowled the EMU campus; he was pretty well known amongst the men and women of the Sophomore, Junior and Senior classes.  This predator prayed mostly on women of both the University of Michigan and Eastern Michigan University.  Many of the victims were from Ypsilanti, hence it was still big news in 1972, even though John Norman Collins was found guilty in August of 1970; coinciding with my arrival to Ypsilanti, Collins' first appeal was rejected in October of 1972.

Naturally, this book captured my interest given its time and place, but what I didn't know and what equally held my attention was how many other victims there were and that there was a California connection of which I was not aware, neither then nor when I started the book.  I'm also fascinated with the legalese of it all (I had once entertained the idea of becoming an attorney) so it was interesting to learn the details and the thought process of why Collins was only charged and prosecuted for one murder and not all.  Equally interesting was the effort of the legal team to not get a mistrial and why they wanted to keep Collins in Michigan and not have him tried in California.

This book was written in 2016 with the benefit of a great deal of impressive historical research.  It also tells how Collins continued with the appeals process and changed his name to that of his biological father, and the goal of getting transferred to Canada.  These were all events of which I was not aware because as we all know we tend to lose interest or heinous crimes such as this oftentimes fade from our radar as time (and the overburdened legal system) marches on.  Plus, once I left Michigan to go to West Point, naturally there wasn't as much attention since it was no longer local news.

A very interesting side note is that the author, Gregory A. Fournier, received his bachelor's and master’s degrees from Eastern Michigan University while the murders were occurring! He actually lived near John Norman Collins and his interactions were not pleasant at the time.  Read this book to learn more!

Sometimes the scariest stories are the ones that are actually true, such as the truth about my pocketbook, which is scary for me, haha.

Good morning Endre. From never reading fiction to a foray through a couple hundred books I am now into history and that slows my pace as I ponder my way through. Maybe this one will change my direction again someday. Thanks for the recommendation. Enjoy your day.

Endre as I have said before, I am not much of a reader, but I would watch the movie if they turned this book into one.

George Souto  would you believe it in 1977  William Marin made a movie titled "Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep", he was the writer/producer and director of the film. The convicted killer's attorneys squashed it and it was never released.....

Looks good, Endre Barath, Jr.  , but I have two books, one I am reading and the other on the shelf - The shelf is  We Are the Lucky Ones ( soon to be a series on HULU ), the one I am reading is    Zone of Interest  (which the movie is taken from but different ( still very strange) When I am finished perhaps.
