Meet Birgit Witherspoon, Owner of B Balanced in Bay Park - San Diego, CA
B Balanced – San Diego Nutritionist is about improving lives naturally to look better, feel better and be better through bio-energetic solutions – because working with food and nutrients (the body’s fuel) is working with life force, or energy, which directly impacts our state of health.
Birgit’s focus is on helping people who are frustrated with their trial and error experience in striving to achieve improved health.
Talk about self-conscious, try having a beer belly while talking to a holistic healer! 😂
Describe your business
We offer a full array of holistic and healthy services including but not limited to: Digestive Issues, Symptom Surveys, Holistic Health Counselling, Emotional Trigger Release, Cleansing, Purification & Detoxification, Blood-Type Diet & Lifestyle, and so much more!
Where are you originally from?
I grew up in a small village in Germany surrounded by farms, ranches and lots of horses! I began my residency in the United States back East in Atlanta, GA, moving to San Diego in 2001.
What made you decide to open this business?
I witnessed my mother’s struggle to be healthy. We had well balanced, home-cooked meals every day, with sweets only as an occasional treat. Nevertheless, even with moderate eating, my mother’s torso became enlarged (like the Michelin Man) while her extremities remained thin; not an attractive sight and devastating to her self-esteem. She went from doctor to doctor, was put on one medication after another and was told to get her eating habits in order.
She was diagnosed with diabetes, high blood pressure, arthritis, high cholesterol, insomnia, cardiovascular disease and more. Eventually, she met a physician who fine-tuned her medications so that she could manage her pain and misery for a few years. She was taking 27 medications and still did not feel well, but she never gave up.
On her own, she tinkered with holistic modalities and took care of herself with regular massages, chiropractic care, and other approaches, but she also never gave up her medication regimen. Ultimately, she never found the underlying cause for her continuing health issues.
What drives you to do what you do? What motivates you?
There is no condition that cannot be improved. We help everybody who has the desire to improve their life and is willing to commit to the journey. We cannot predict how long it will take to heal; too many factors play a role in it. However, we can predict that everybody will improve and feel better as long as they do their part by following the recommendations.
What is something most people don't know about the business?
Health challenges come in many forms, expressions, symptoms, and variations. No two people are the same and though they may present the same symptoms, their journey of healing may look very different from each other.
What would your customers say they love most about your business?
They get results - they leave feeling better! We have treated pregnant women, clients battling weight issues, cancer and insomnia to name a few; we get measurable results for them if they put in the work.
How long have you lived in the neighborhood?
I've lived and worked in The Bay Park neighborhood for many, many years! I can actually walk to work, I live so close!
What were the factors that made you choose this neighborhood?
I live here so of course I love it here in Bay Park, so why not start a business where you love to be?
What do you love most about the neighborhood?
The proximity to Mission Bay and being able to take long lunch break walks there. I also like having Sprouts Farmer's Market up the street and Modo Yoga San Diego and Bay Park is absolutely centrally located, making it easy to commute anywhere you need to go in San Diego!
What are your favorite restaurants in the neighborhood?
Farmer's Table is definitely one of my favorites!
What is something most people don't know about you?
I love to be around and ride horses! Since I was a little girl, I always felt a unique connection to them and that has never left me. I still ride today!
Why do you think it's important for people to shop local?
We have a wonderful neighborhood where many of the owners both live and work here, so it's important to support them and help keep our neighborhood and businesses thriving! There's so many great "mom & pop" owned stores, restaurants and businesses in our neighborhood that offer unique choices and great customer service many of the chain and big box stores do not.
