I had the pleasure of dining at Happy Sumo Sushi restaurant for my oldest granddaughter’s birthday. It is our tradition for the birthday person to choose the kind of food they want to eat. We go out to celebrate at the restaurant of their choice.

Aylandra chose Sushi for her special day. Aylandra is an avid sushi lover, and she can sure down her sushi!

We went to Happy Sumo at The Shops at Riverwoods in Provo, Utah.

The first thing I noticed about Happy Sumo was the atmosphere. It’s set in a cozy, upscale environment. It gave the restaurant a very relaxed and comfortable feeling, making it a perfect place to enjoy a casual meal with your friends or family.

The booths have curtains for added privacy. We were given a corner booth tucked away in the corner of the restaurant.

There is also seating at the Sushi Bar. I miss the Sushi and Habachi bars I became accustomed to when I lived in Japan.

Happy Sumo is much more than just a sushi bar. They have a variety of appetizers, entrees, and rolls that will appeal to everyone.

We ordered miso soup, pot stickers, the Sumo sampler and Sumo Crispy Rice as appetizers. The crispy rice appetizer was delicious! It contains chunks of Ahi tuna and inari in a spicy aoli topped with citrus wasabi, avocado, and tobiko.

One of my sons ordered the steak entree, and he was surprised how good it was. One of my daughters ordered Tempura and General Chung’s chicken entree.

The rest of us ordered Sushi and lots of it!

My granddaughter ordered Philly rolls, Spicy tuna rolls, and a California roll.

My favorite was the Rockstar Roll. It was made with spicy tuna, cucumber, and sprouts topped with avocado, lime, green onions and tempura crunchies.

I ordered a side of tempura vegetables. I was disappointed. The only vegetables included were onions, undercooked carrots, and a tiny bit of zucchini. There should have been potatoes, sweet potatoes, broccoli, and mushrooms included as well.

There are numerous Sumo Signature Sushi options and then the regular nori sushi options. The menu is extensive, and it can be a little overwhelming.

This sushi restaurant is especially busy on Friday and Saturday evenings. I recommend making reservations if you’re planning to eat there during those times.

Make a reservation here.

REVIEW — 4 stars!

This is an expensive and upscale sushi restaurant, but there are better-priced sushi restaurants in the area. If you don’t mind heading towards north Orem and beyond, you will find better-priced sushi restaurants.

So, it's 6:30am where I am and I just checked out the menu and want some sushi. Although I don't know how anyone can pick - there are SOO many choices. I only got through the first few rows of rolls and already thought the spicy tuna crunch roll, rockstar roll, jazz roll looked amazing. Yum.

My last trip for sushi was disappointing - the place was so loud we couldn't even hear our dinner companions talk and there were only one or two rolls that didn't have cooked fish. And the taste was meh. Oh well.
