Friday Fun…Do You Know Yours?

It’s time for some Friday Fun!!! Tomorrow March 2 is Texas Independence Day. It commemorates the day Texas formally declared its independence from Mexico.

I am proud to be a Texan and know what most Texas school children are taught… the State Song, the State Flower and the State bird.

The State Song of Texas….Yes, I still remember the words and in fact, once sang it while in the wine cellar at Arturo’s Restaurant in Boca Raton…and yes it was courtesy of a few adult beverages.)

The State Flower…The Beloved Texas Bluebonnetbluebonnet season is around the corner. Soon the fields will be painted in a beautiful blue with a spinkling of the brilliant orange of the Indian paintbrush. Families head out to the fields to have photos taken in the middle of the bluebonnets. (watch out for snakes!)

The State Bird…The Mockingbird. I could wake up every morning to the songs of the mockingbird.

So for our Friday Fun…share your State’s song, flower and bird!!!

Montana's state flower is the Bitterroot, which is an herb!

Our bird is the Western Meadowlark.

And our song is Montana! (Go figure)

Hello Kathy - California admission day to the United States is well-remembered.  By me, at least.  In school, I loved learning about our state history and continued to enjoy it as I found out more even when it wasn't always so good.

Michael Jacobs I wonder if they teach state history in schools these days.  what I remember is a small book that looked like a comic book that had chapters of Texas history in it.

Kathy Streib - I remember our fourth-grade California book.  it was hard-bound with many illustrations as I recall. There was a less-memorable textbook in junior high school.  If taught in high school and beyond, any books have long been forgotten if they ever existed.    Thankfully, my fourth-grade teacher, Mrs. Crum made an impact on me.  She was also my first teacher crush.  And she made learning interesting and fun.

Hi Kathy:

The flower is the California Poppy (which I knew).

The bird is the California Quail - we see and hear them often in the canyon behind our house.

The song is "I Love You, California."

Bonus - the state fruit as of 2013 is the avocado!

Have a great weekend, and Happy Anniversary to you and Larry.

I'm drain a blank on the song and bird, but from what I see of lawns, some think it's a dandelion.
