That Thing About Quotes. . .

Super Tuesday Thoughts

to Ponder and to Question. . .

Today in California our election primary will be held.  Super Tuesday, as it is known, will be held for more than a baker's dozen other states too. Campaigning can certainly conjure up an abundance of words.  And a lot of dough, too. I digress. . .

However, today I’m thinking of words of wisdom that put perspective into place for me.   Not political nor talk of religion, sex or money, my thoughts go to the topic of quotes. There are a number of ActiveRain members who share them. And in many sorts of ways.

Maybe he was or wasn’t the first, but I remember reading an inspirational post by Paul S. Henderson, REALTOR®, CRS who added the disclaimer-of-sorts attributed to with his selection a while back.

A lot of things start me thinking. Words of wisdom. Words not-so-wise, too. Attributed words as well as those unrelated can cause pondering to begin.  Where did I hear that?  See that?  Previously experience it. And in what context? Yikes.

There is a quote, at least part of it, that has been rumbling around in my mind for a while:

My philosophy is

what people say about me is none of my business.

I am who I am and what I do.

Expect nothing and accept everything.

Attributed to Jodie Foster

It intrigued me.  Additional investigation showed me part of it was from another quote from someone else.  I can’t recall the entirety of it. And that's not the point. With today's selected quote in mind, I am thinking of attribution, interpretation and all sorts of other things.  And that’s what quotes continue to do for me.  Questioning. Wondering. Still pondering.

I'll occasionally look for a quote for a post and can be quite the rabbithole trying to determine who ACTUALLY said it.  Was it really Mark Twain?  Or what we think is the standard quote a twisted version of the actual words?

"What we've got here is... failure to communicate. Some men you just can't reach. So you get what we had here last week, which is the way he wants it... well, he gets it. I don't like it any more than you men."

Morning Michael, great quote, and this year's election should be very interesting, and boring!

Hi Michael- It may have been Paul S. Henderson, REALTOR®, CRS that began using "attributed to" when sharing his quotes.   Ideas are rarely unique so it wouldn't surprise me that something said has been repeated...or at least a version of the idea.

Kathy Streib - we see a version of interpretation in ActiveRainLand each and every day as members share their thoughts/views on the same/similar subjects in the blogs they write.

Strolling on the socials I quite often stumble upon inspirational words that must have come from somewhere. It irks me how many times nobody is given credit for it. When I am intrigued, I start researching but that can lead to looking up something else, and follow that link and oh, look over there.. at least I am learning something in the process.

Andrea Bedard - I have stumbled down more than a few rabbit holes over the years.  Sometimes there have been some delightful discoveries. On other occasions, I have seen/heard some things that are much more disastrous.

Good afternoon Michael,

Of course you're still pondering and you have us pondering! I'm always amazed at how different people can interpret the same quote! It's good to have different voices weigh in....then if we are smart we'll all try and look at it from different angles and see if we agree with our initial impression.

Dorie Dillard Austin TX - perhaps, pondering is perfect for perspective.  Hmm. . .

Not much of an election season. No intrigue as to who will win the nominations...now at the conventions I suggest buying some popcorn and soda...those could get fun.

Michael Jacobs, do you think we should ponder on quotes? I have always needed to improve my quotes. We should wonder who will receive the Oscar for Best Picture; maybe we will be surprised. It is much lighter and less controversial.

Mar 05, 2024 03:41 PM
Michael Jacobs

Hannah Williams - I had an Oscar-themed post in mind, but I gave up the topics of movies and movie-going for the most part a while ago.  The comments were expected and dare I say, "predictable".

Michael Jacobs - I read many books with interesting quotes that fits the narrative. And I have attended many lectures and presentations where quotes were used appropriately. Some, I look up and many I learn by researching the author to find out who they were and what are their credentials. For me personally, a good quote is like just the right spice inside a recipe that gives it more flavor and enjoyable.

Michael Jacobs - You made me laugh! Yes! it's good to mix up quotes with "words of wisdom." There are never too many lessons or recipes to learn! Some are spicy, others sweet. And then there are those that are just right and tasteful too! I get those creative juices too. I think you're the only one on AR who understand me.

Patricia Feager, MBA, CRS, GRI,MRP - quotes, sayings and other words of wisdom can be good ingredients in storytelling and writing of all sorts.

By mixing them together in a narrative, the result will be batter (err better - oops).  Thank you for sharing your comment, it started my imagination going in a recipe-like reply.  Preparing such responses allows creative juices to flow.  👨‍🍳🥘👨‍🍳

Memorable quotes can take us back to certain times that were relevant in life or become up-to-date. Every time a challenge presents, I remind myself of Henry Ford's quote, “Whether you think you can, or you think you can't--you're right.”

I'm right 100% of the time if that quote is correct, Michael!

Michael, Jodie's quote sounds very Tao to me. I'm studying Dr. Wayne Dyer's book, Change Your Thoughts, Change Your Life, his take on the Tao Te Ching.

Very thoughtful post for pondering, as you said!

Thank goodness we are all uniquely different and celebrate those million little qualities Michael Jacobs . Or don't but things go smoother if acceptance happens rather than anger. Expecting everyone to be carbon copy is unrealistic and a trifle boring right?

Hello Michael, I too noticed Paul Henderson's 'Attributed to'.  Thought it meaningful in this 'web world'  I do not use it, but rather expect most everyone to realize the quoted names may or may not come from the person stated to have said them.  We would like to think they have in most cases but there really is no way of knowing for sure.  I try concentrate on the words...as your post suggests.  m

Mar 14, 2024 09:44 AM

Mark Don McInnes, Sandpoint-Idaho - I don't always use "attributed to" each time either.  The thought in your comment aligns with me.  Of course, there is an element of consistency (or is that inconsistency) that mixes up my mind on a regular basis.  I apologize for this late reply, I appreciate your comment.
