A Frog Serenade in our Carlsbad Yard

By
Real Estate Agent with eXp Realty of California, Inc. CA DRE #01490977

We've been hearing an occasional frog off and on in the last few weeks around our home, and recently have been hearing a chorus of them in the canyon behind our house.

There are reportedly several different species of frogs common to Southern California but I'm not sure which ones these are...I'm going with Pacific Tree Frog.

Last night we had the frog chorus again in the canyon, but also had one lone frog right outside the house serenading us. It was pretty loud even in the house with the widows and doors closed. And our cat, Fiona, was pretty interested when we opened the side door to the yard to listen.

I'm not up on frog lore but I'm guessing the frog was looking for a mate. Or just liked to sing!

Thankfully, the frog clammed up when it was time for bed a few hours later. It reminded me of the occasional mockingbird in the summer that sings all night long. While I like hearing it during the day I don't appreciate it singing all night long!

The feature photo is not our singing frog but courtesy of Pixabay.

My goodness Jeff, aren't you the picky one?  lmao.  Serenade all you want till I go to bed...chirp your heart's content as long as in the day?  lol  Make it a good week ahead.  m

Ha ha Mark Don McInnes, Sandpoint-Idaho  But I like my sleep! However with a young playful cat in the house it is often disrupted during the night. So what's a frog and mockingbird on top of it!

Jeff Dowler, CRS - what delightful story to read! I loved it! I miss the sounds of frogs in the early morning and late at night. They were always up late at night in Maine. I just love when nature co-mingles humans. Who knows. Those frogs could be a selling feature if you decide to sell and move.

It reminded me of the Spring Peepers we use to hear back in Boston in our house in Bolton in the very early Spring Patricia Feager, MBA, CRS, GRI,MRP  They were around for days.

And there was a creek on the other side of the road and we used to hear bullfrogs as well.

We get lots of wildlife sounds - the frogs, owls, coyotes, birds in general.

Most people look at the sounds of the critters as soothing, I guess that can get to be too much after a while as well.

It IS soothing and I enjoy it during the day Ed Silva, 203-206-0754  But somehow it's less enjoyable in the middle of the night, at least for me!

Hi Jeff- I've not been a fan of frogs since a huge frog jumped on me when I was a young girl. When we lived in FL, we had frogs and their chorus all of the time. There was one we had to be careful of because they were poisonous to dogs.

That must have been quite the experience as a kid Kathy Streib

Good thing you knew about the frog that was poisonous for dogs - who knew!?

Hello Jeff - although I wouldn't necessarily describe it as a serenade, nature has been known to play a number of tunes.  And while orchestration may not be a part of each performance, the repertoire not exactly scheduled and the number of encores unexpected, the sounds of silence can become a search on the way to dreamland.

PS - are you close enough to hear waves crashing?   I miss that. . .

Well, serenade may be stretching it a bit Michael Jacobs .

No waves nearby unless we drive several miles to the ocean! We went, watched and listened yesterday for a little while - so relaxing.

I am glad that he was respectful and stopped by the time you were ready for bed, haha.  I wouldn't be able to sleep with that going on.

Hi Brian England

I was glad it finally stopped after a few hours even though it was kinda fun to listen to for a while.

We have a very noisy owl behind our house, the frogs have not started up yet, but I am sure it will not be too long before their voices are added to the chorus. Love the video, he is very loud.

We had a couple of owls on the roof the other morning quite early, but normally they are not all that close, but close enough to hear.

The frog WAS loud and so close by.

He (?) did a solo for a while but then the chorus started up in the canyon again. It went on for several hours.

Jeff the frog is almost the same color as the pad it is sitting on.  Hard to detect.

I agree George Souto!

But I can't take credit for this photo - it comes from Pixabay!

Dear Jeff,

Tree frogs are loud!! Ours have not come out of torpor yet, but in the summer, they love to go into the pool skimmers and really amplify their voices. They might be using your canyon like that. Little guys can appear 10 feet tall that way.

Good morning, Jeff... I can't imagine what my Bingo would do if he saw any frogs in our yard! Then again, maybe that's why we don't see any.

Mar 13, 2024 04:34 AM
Jeff Dowler, CRS

Hi Nina Hollander, Broker  So nice to see you.

The frogs have been particularly noisy this year...perhaps all the rain we've had. It's been every day for hours when it gets dark and now for almost 2 weeks.

Yes, I would think Bingo might intimidate them, and maybe other critters. Our skunk was back visiting the night before last...could be out there every night!

Jeff Dowler, CRS we used to have a nasty porcupine who came out at night. Once Bingo arrived, he found greener pastures.
