Preparing Home For Sale: Colors To Avoid

By

Of course, every Stager will tell you this, but if you are preparing your home for sale without professional staging advice, remember that some colors can be off-putting and distracting.

An article from NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS  shares statistics and explains why those colors do not work. And why neutrals do.

So..stop before you paint your living room or dining room red. Red is the most off-putting color, according to a survey. It is extremely strong and may not be to everybody’s taste,” the study notes.

Fixr’s Paint & Color Trends report the following as the most off-putting colors to home buyers:

Red: 53%

Lime green: 53%

Bright yellow: 40%

Mustard yellow: 19%

Pink: 10%

Turquoise: 9%

Home stagers and designers like using color strategically to warm up a space and make it appear more spacious. We (Realtors) will advise the same.

61% of experts recommend using warm neutrals—like beige and white—to help make small spaces appear larger. “Warm neutrals can reflect light and visually recede, and their calmness can make a space feel less overwhelming,” the study notes. White was a favorite among home stagers in making spaces seem more spacious and giving the illusion of higher and wider ceilings.

When selling a house, paint and color trends need to be used in a softened way. Even if “attention-grabbing” colors are popular, your buyers may not love these trendy colors.  And while those (Trends) are great for interior design, they need to be used in a more moderate way when selling a property.”

Anna Chroscicki If I was painting my house to get it ready for selling, I would stay away from colors that are not neutral, and definitely NO bright colors.

I went on a listing appointment today and saw a red dining room. I had not seen one in a long time.

It is important to keep the tones relatively mellow - which doesn't mean colors can't be used, but they shouldn't be loud!

Visited a house in a nice neighborhood and it was as if a box of Crayola vomited throughout the bedrooms. Each one had a different color: red, purple, blue, yellow, green, AND....they matched the carpet & trim in each room! It was hideous. The house has since transferred a couple of times and one of the owners changed the colors and carpet.
