Casa Carmen, on Old Baltimore Pike in Jennersville, West Grove PA, the winery and vineyard that is right behind our home in Big Elk community has at last begun their soft opening. Every Friday and Saturday from 4.00 to 8.00 pm they will be open.
The winery had worked with Ryan Homes and offered all homeowners in Big Elk a complimentary glass of wine, distributing some tasting glasses at an event in the fall. Bring the glass along and your first glass of wine is free.
We have been busy the last few weeks, but last night we visited the tasting room, built in the style of Spanish and South American tasting rooms to see how things were going. I have already purchased some of their vermouth which they also offer and used them in some cocktails at home. But chatting with one of the sons last night we discovered that a lot of younger people in Spain and South America drink Vermouth, often as a lighter option to wine, using it with soda water as a spritz. We actually tried this when we got home, pairing it with a slice of orange and salty olive, it was very good.

But, we came to try some wines. We began with a white, a dry Riesling style wine, and a Rose. The rose was very pale and both were quite dry, but had good flavors. We then tried the two reds on the menu, a Tinto and a Duende which was a little bolder. Again, good aroma, and good flavor. We took a bottle of the Tinto home to have with dinner, Sockeye Salmon with garlic broccoli. It went very well, and this will be a nice wine chilled in the summer as well. The Duende is probably better with red meat, possibly grilled. We paired the wines with some spicy chips, based on patatas brava, a little spicy but very good. They also offer some other tapas style foods along with some cocktails and local beer.

We look forward to visiting over the summer and found the conversation with the owners very interesting and pleasant. In fact we are stopping by this evening with some friends who are visiting and are wine and vermouth lovers.
