Many residents of South Central Minot are stumped at what is happening at Roosevelt Park and the Roosevelt Park Zoo.
The short, unsatisfying, answer is flood mitigation. On June 22nd 2011 Minot was flooded by the worst flood in it's recorded history. I'd love to tell you the whole story as it is an amazing tale of government incompetence that involves both Canada and the USA.
The wholesale slaughter of 100+ year old trees falls under flood mitigation BUT the whole/true story equally involves the Roosevelt Park Zoo (which falls under the Minot Park District).
Roosevelt Park is Minot's second largest park and the only park in South Central Minot. The short story here is that Minot's South central residents are going to lose more then half of their park as once all these wonderful trees have been slaughtered and the flood mitigation is completed what is left will be given over to the Roosevelt Park Zoo. While that sounds nice the fact is that the zoo already has plenty of unused land to expand onto and over the past 20 years they have spent many millions of taxpayer dollars on upgrades while also pricing them out of reach of most families budget. We pay for it but we can not afford to enjoy it. And now they are destroying the only nearby park that we can enjoy.
I have so much more to say on this topic and Minot's extravagant spending but I want to keep my post short enough that you will read this and following posts.
In conclusion, related to Real Estate, if you are on a fixed income Minot is NOT financially friendly to you. Yes many of those who built Minot and called it home for decades are moving to towns and counties outside of town. Before you purchase a home in Minot you may wish to visit with a Realtor and find a community that is financially friendly to those of us on a fixed income.
