Being Sweet Is Part of Being a Professional Real Estate Agent

Real Estate Agent with Dirt Road Real Estate SA676002000

Yesterday when walking a 40 acre parcel with a buyer, we exchanged numerous laughs as we looked for the ribbon markers at the property corners.  Unfortunately, we only found one, but it was sooo tiny we would have missed it. We both laughed together wondering if the listing agent could have made the ribbon any smaller. Being able to laugh with a client and have that laughter acceptable is very gratifying.

The word sweet has synonyms which include pleasant, pleasing, agreeable, delightful satisfying, gratifying, acceptable, entertaining, and inviting.

Thinking of past experiences many of these words have always been present.

My goal as a professional real estate agent is to be sweet. This weekend I am driving 105 miles to the next county to the south to meet with a seller who is elderly. This seller wanting to list four (4) vacant land parcels or dirt here in Golden Valley, Mohave County, AZ I can’t imagine having her read over 100 pages on the phone. Also, the seller doesn’t have a printer.

When I told the seller I would travel down to discuss the vacant land listings with her, she was quite surprised and did mention how “sweet” I was being.  For me being sweet is being professional and there truly is no other way to be.

Yes many agents conduct all their real estate transactions over the phone or Internet.  However, I live by President Teddy Roosevelt’s words of wisdom:

No one cares how much you know until they know how much you care.

Hello Leanne - while sweetness, per se, hasn't been one of my goals in life, that description has been used at times during my time on this planet.  As I read the example you share in this post, I see connection.  And I do think that is quite important.  In real estate as well as everyday living.

Nothing necessarily wrong with confection, mind you, but as Oscar Wilde (plus quite a few others) has been attributed with the words, everything in moderation including moderation.  Happy Friday.  😃

So true about moderation.  I guess we can be sweet and still be business like. And as my Swedish grandmother said to me, as well as others, one catches more with honey than with vinegar.

That was said/repeated around our house too.

Good morning, Leanne... I don't know that anyone has ever called me sweet. But I do try to be kind, pleasant, helpful, and easy to be around.

Maybe they may not use the word sweet, but I am sure they may have thought it given the words you shared here on this post. Good morning.

I love to laugh, so if I can't laugh with a client, then I know we are not a very good fit, haha.

That makes sense knowing you and you have a great laugh, quite contagious I might add. Good morning.

Good morning Leanne. Selling dirt, as you like to say, is complicated in your market area. Utility access, water access, zoning restrictions, existing easements, topography and other factors are considerations that must be researched and known. Physical examination is also a necessary factor. I am willing to say that many listing agents never do the proper research and that you would not take the listing unless you do. Safe travels to your new listings!

Good morning to you Wayne and Happy Freya's Day. Thank you for kind words. I believe many would not travel down and my belief is I have no control over the behaviors of others. For some, selling dirt is about quantity (high volume, low dollars) and not quality. I believe in just the opposite, quality must come first and if quantity (dollars) happen that is a positive action.

Research is essential. Thankfully my husband rides shotgun to ensure my safety.

Good morning Leanne,

I was always taught one catches more with honey than with vinegar. It definitely has proven to be true. My goal has always been to be professional, approachable and to provide amazing service and have fun while doing it.

Working with a client is always a challenge but when they know you are with them through it all that is when we know how much they appreciate the help.

Isn't that the truth Ed Silva, 203-206-0754?  Unfortunately so many agents fail to understand this basic sales principle.

I think being sweet can be interpreted as such depending on the agent and client. While I am very analytical, I can think of other agents in my firm are almost entirely about the analytics- definitely not "sweet" as traditionally defined. That said- it can still come across as caring when the agent is fighting for their client. Our territory includes a large client base of extremely analytical people - so what might not be defined as sweet by most people can be seen as sweet here- especially if agent and client speaks the same "analytics" based language.

Agree about different interpretations of sweet and why I went to the dictionary to learn the different synonyms as I am also quite analytical. I believe agreeable means for me we are speaking in similar terms.
