Get Out of My House - Diddly Squat!

Squatting is real, despite some cynics, who assume it is fake news. Owners are getting killed, others may have to forgo a lengthy legal battle to get the criminals out of their property. A woman, beaten to death by squatters, was found by her 19-year old son, shoved into a duffle bag in the back of a closet of her home.

Read this story: Two arrested in Pennsylvania after New York squatters allegedly killed woman, stuffed her in duffel bag

A soldier was deployed for a year to Poland. He was weeks away from coming back home home to his home in Decatur, Georgia, when the property manager called and told home someone had illegally broke in, changed the keys and several people were living there. He called the police 4 times, they were unable to do anything.

Here is his story: Deployed soldier unable to return to his Decatur house because of squatters

Squatting also interferes with real estate sales. An Army officer came home from deployment in another state to find a criminal living in her house. Police's arms were tied until she finally went to the media. Drugs and guns were found inside, once they made entry. The buyer got spooked and cancelled the contract.

Her story: Squatter moves into Army officer’s home while she’s on duty and refuses leave

Here are some precautions to take as a property owner:

⇒  Never leave a key in a contractor box, it can be broken

⇒  Get a security system and make sure it is in working order

⇒  Have the lights timed to come on and go off several times daily

⇒  Hire a reputable property manangement company to monitor often

If gone for any length of time, notify neighbors to watch for all activity

None of these items are 100% foolproof. At least, they may be a deterrent for criminals, who are looking for an opportunity to prey upon unsuspecting homeowners and make them pay for their aggregious actions.

Last of all, if you see something, say something!

The United States is looking pretty weak to the rest of the world right now for everything that has happened on the last several years. More people need to wake up and realize that, Carol Williams. Please God, Bless America!

Good morning Wanda. Until the laws regarding squatting are changed in favor of the owners, continued chaos will persist. Enjoy your day.

Not only self-entitlement, but a legal system that favors the criminals and not the honest hard working we the people.  So sad.

Wanda Kubat-Nerdin - Wanda Can! Laws have to be changed! Unfortunately, they are trying to change the wrong rules. Who is the law trying to protect?

Many years ago, I had sellers who wanted to sell their property but could not because squatters were living there, and no one would help them get them out

We need real leaders instead of those who are trying to destroy everything this country was built upon, Leanne Smith. Criminals in today's world are being rewarded and law abiding people, punished or killed.

Outrageous decisions made at the top are adversely affecting everyone in America right now, at least the working class.

That's not leading in my opinion, it's getting in the way of our rights as law abiding citizens, Hannah Williams!

Good evening Wanda Kubat-Nerdin - Wanda Can! ,

It is absolutely mind boggling what is going on in our country! The homeowner is the criminal and has no rights, and the criminal is protected and has all the rights. What is wrong with this picture?????

Wanda:

There seem to be more and more reports of squatters all the time, and the homeowners are the ones who suffer since the laws don't protect them.

There was a story last year about a woman who moved into a luxury AirBNB guesthouse in the Los Angeles area and was there for about 570 days rent-free. There was a lengthy court battle until she finally moved out.

I just read the article and that woman should be jailed. The self-entitlement is strong on that one!

So sorry to hear about your brother, Wanda.

I suspect there are far more instances of squatter issues than we know about since they never make it to the media. I think it's a huge problem.

Seems criminals are treated better than law abiding citizens these days, Jeff Dowler, CRS. Have had a few opportunities to invest in vavcation-type properties but am glad that did not come to fruition.

My brother lost his rental producing property because the tenants stopped paying rent, refused to move out and he lost it to the bank. Laws need to protect property owners over squatters, period!

Good morning, Wanda... none of your suggestions are "brain surgery." They really are common sense. Sadly common sense if not that common these days.

I am glad that Kathy Streib featured your post.  You are shining a light on a terrible situation.

Squatters are bold and can move in quickly without much notice, Nina Hollander, Broker. Some even have door knobs in their back packs to lock owners out. Preventing that from happening takes paying attention and a few steps!

More people need to be notified on this and another reason to contact past clients who have purchased rental properties, Lise Howe. It can save them a lot of trouble and money!
