Now that Spring is in the air, often one thinks about possible short trips to explore while the weather is cool and balmy! Tucson, Arizona, is surrounded by beautiful natural landscapes and interesting destinations that make for great three-day getaways.
Sedona, Arizona (Approx. 4-hour drive): Known for its stunning red rock formations, Sedona offers plenty of outdoor activities such as hiking, mountain biking, and Jeep tours. You can explore the scenic trails of Red Rock State Park, visit the Chapel of the Holy Cross for breathtaking views, or simply relax in one of the many spas in the area. Personally, I love the wine tours nearby!
Grand Canyon National Park (Approx. 4.5-hour drive): A visit to the Grand Canyon is a must-do if you're in Arizona. Spend a few days exploring the South Rim, where you can hike along the rim trails, take a mule ride into the canyon, or enjoy a scenic helicopter tour. The Grand Canyon also offers ranger-led programs and informative visitor centers to learn about the geology and history of the area. One of my friends even took a week-long river trip down the Canyon!
Flagstaff, Arizona (Approx. 2-hour drive): Flagstaff is a picturesque mountain town located at the base of the San Francisco Peaks. It's a great destination for outdoor enthusiasts, with opportunities for hiking, skiing (in season), and exploring the nearby Coconino National Forest. Don't miss a visit to the Lowell Observatory or a stroll through the historic downtown area with its shops, restaurants, and breweries.

Bisbee, Arizona (Approx. 2.5-hour drive): Bisbee is a quirky and colorful town nestled in the Mule Mountains near the Mexico border. Explore its historic streets lined with Victorian architecture, visit the Bisbee Mining & Historical Museum to learn about the town's mining history, or take a very interesting tour of the Queen Mine. Bisbee also offers unique art galleries, shops, and cozy cafes to enjoy.
The Chiricahua Mountains (Approx. 3 hour drive) Lovely and scenic, this drive to the SE corner of Arizona is well worth the time. Stop off the track for short hikes, photos, and picnics. The rock formations are not to be missed!
Tombstone, Arizona (Approx. 1-hour drive): Step back in time with a visit to Tombstone, known as "The Town Too Tough to Die." Experience the Wild West atmosphere with reenactments of the famous Gunfight at the O.K. Corral, visit historic saloons and museums, or take a narrated ghost tour to learn about the town's haunted past. It's fun, too, to visit the rock shops or take a trek through a guided mine tour.
These are just a few examples of the many possibilities for three-day getaways from Tucson, offering a mix of outdoor adventure, cultural experiences, and historical exploration.
