Where Am I ?

Did you know that it is National Map Reading Day?

This morning, an email from Terry Green from PRMG asked the following question.

"What would you do if the directional satellites went down? Can you get from point A to point B without using a finger and thumb to zoom in?"

Hmm. How many of us could still function without our Waze, Apple Maps, Google Maps, or any apps, including GPS? Do we know where we are? Do we know where we are going?

Remember when we had to rely on ADC books, paper maps, and our sense of direction to find our way around?

They were not fun days for me, but I think they were the main reason I became a listing agent. When selling Real Estate, it's much easier to find one location than several with buyers in tow.

I fondly remember calling my husband TLH and asking, "Where am I?" Thank goodness he had a wonderful sense of direction and humor and could usually "find me." At the time, my sense of direction was not wonderful. I used to joke that finding my mailbox attached to my house was tough.

If the GPS goes down, I might as well have been in quicksand! My navigational devices in the car and my phone feel like I have a guardian angel watching over me.

I  should still focus on my surroundings and improve my navigational skills. But I am not interested in  finding hidden places or a new neighborhood.

I hope I am never so stranded without a GPS, that I have to say,

"Where Am I?"

Good afternoon Margaret,

I remember my husband Geno had the best sense of direction! Unlike me who now feels so blessed with my GPS and Google Maps. I never thought of it but it is like a guardian angel looking over me!!

Margaret the availability of GPS has made driving much easier.  But if I had to use physical maps again, I would not have any problem doing so.

Margaret- I too am laughing because I love maps!!!  When we take our road trips, we always have a road atlas in the car. We've had to use it when part of I-10 going from FL to TX was shut down.  The road atlas gave us a broader view of where we could go.

In fact, and yes, I'm crazy, I'll often go to the map to retrace where we've been.

Margaret, I'm such a relic that I carry an old ADT Map in my trunk, Forget that it's now totally out of date, but hey! You never know!

I was going to buy an atlas of my area recently and they don't make the really in-depth ones anymore. I can definitely read maps so as long as I had one, I'd be fine!

Margaret, I still have some distrust of GPS when early on we had a showing that was new construction.  We didn't realize the directions were taking us to the center of the town rather than the house, since it didn't know the address!

I carry a Rand McNally in my car for my long trips.  I don't need the directions to get from here to my parents' home in WV, but I carry it just in case.  It's beat up, the cover came off long ago, but I still like having it there just in case :)

Good morning Margaret. Must say there are time when I prefer a map to get the lay of the land. GPS is good but lacks the benefit of overview. It also has benefits of keeping you from a route with a dead end. Enjoy your day.

Hello, Miss Margaret Rome Baltimore 410-530-2400 this "triggers" the days when I did work with buyers. Planning and preparing a buyer tour took hours. It was not uncommon back in those days to see 10-15 homes.  The maps were the ticket to successful landings.

Funny that I would read your post today! We used Siri to direct us to a hospital to visit a family member. When we got to a parking lot that in no way was near a hospital, Siri said "You have arrived at your destination".

I searched the address for the hospital, input it into my car navigation system, and found that we were 15 miles away from our destination!
