If you are considering a home in Avenel, you are probably curious where the children go to school here.  Rest assured that they attend some of the best schools in Montgomery County! 

The public high school for Avenel is Winston Churchill, located at 11300 Gainsborough Road.  Winston Churchill High School is ranked fifth within Maryland. Students have the opportunity to take Advanced Placement® coursework and exams. The AP participation rate at Winston Churchill High School is 85%. The total minority enrollment is 55%, and 6% of students are economically disadvantaged. Winston Churchill High School is 1 of 30 high schools in the Montgomery County public school system.  Approximately 2200 students attend Churchill HS with a teacher to student ratio of 1:18. 

Two elementary schools serve the families in Avenel: Seven Locks ES and Potomac ES. 

Seven Locks Elementary is a public school located in Bethesda, MD, which is in a large suburb setting. The student population of Seven Locks Elementary is 390 and the school serves PK-5. At Seven Locks Elementary, 62% of students scored at or above the proficient level for math, and 62% scored at or above that level for reading.  The student population is made up of 51% female students and 49% male students. The school enrolls 5% economically disadvantaged students. There are 24 equivalent full-time teachers and 1 full-time school counselor.

Potomac Elementary is a magnet school located in Potomac, MD, which is in a large suburb setting. The student population of Potomac Elementary is 402 and the school serves K-5. At Potomac Elementary, 53% of students scored at or above the proficient level for math, and 53% scored at or above that level for reading.  The school’s minority student enrollment is 60%. The student-teacher ratio is 18:1, which is worse than that of the district. The student population is made up of 49% female students and 51% male students. The school enrolls 3% economically disadvantaged students. There are 22 equivalent full-time teachers and 1 full-time school counselor.

Potomac Elementary School has taught a partial immersion Chinese program since 1996.  In this program, students spend half their day being taught in Chinese and the other half in English. 

The Montgomery County Public School (MCPS) math and science curricula are taught in Chinese.  Reading, language arts and social studies are delivered in English.  Immersion students also receive one hour of direct language instruction in Chinese each week.  Students learn the language through the medium of instruction in Chinese.  They participate in classroom and hands-on activities in Chinese and naturally acquire the language. 

Parents may select this program for their child beginning in kindergarten and first grade. Students remain in the program until fifth grade, after which they can continue in the Chinese immersion program at Hoover Middle School.  Potomac is a local immersion program, meaning that students who reside within the geographic boundaries of the school are offered entry first.  Any remaining places are filled through a lottery program.

Cabin John Middle School is the middle school for Avenel families. The student population of Cabin John Middle School is 1,030 and the school serves grades 6-8. At Cabin John Middle School, 36% of students scored at or above the proficient level for math, and 67% scored at or above that level for reading. The school’s minority student enrollment is 63%. The student-teacher ratio is 15:1, which is worse than that of the district.The student population is made up of 50% female students and 49% male students. The school enrolls 8% economically disadvantaged students. There are 66 equivalent full-time teachers and 4 full-time school counselors.

Wow, I love the photo of the golf course!  Avenel seems like it would be a great place to call home!  Is this the same Avenel where a PGA tournament is played?
