Pigtown, Baltimore, Maryland
Pigtown is an affordable historic community in central southwest Baltimore City bordered by Martin Luther King jr Boulevard to East Monroe Street and West Pratt Street to the north close to many amenities including Camden Yard, Raven Stadium, the Inner Harbor, and the Camden Yard Metro station.
The neighborhood acquired its name during the second half of the 19th century when the area was the site of butcher shops and meat packing plants to process pigs transported from the Midwest on
the B & O Railroad, they were herded across Ostend and Cross Streets to be slaughtered
and processed. I've been told a lot of the homes along that route had their kitchens in the basement and wives would reach out the basement windows and grab a pig as they ran through the streets. In modern-day the Pigtown annual festival features a pig race, called "The Squeakness", to commemorate its history.
Pigtown has been considered one of Baltimore's most promising neighborhoods due to its proximity to I-95, I-295, its proximity to University of Maryland Medical Center, the Biotech Park, and the Inner Harbor. Housing opportunities in Pigtown consist of newer metro homes in Camden Crossing and the traditional 2 and 3-story rowhomes.
