The Leaning Tower of Texas

Two years ago today we headed out on our five week cross country road trip. It had been put off a few years prior because we got very busy in real estate and then the following year Covid shut everything down. We were happy to finally get on the road when we did and we have many fond memories of family we visited, friends we reconnected with and the many wonderful landscapes that unfolded in front of us as we traveled this vast country. So much to see, and so much we did not see….five weeks was not enough time!!

As I went through the first group of photos I took on the road, I focused in on this leaning tower photo. It is something I just happened to capture as we drove by on Rt 40 east of Amarillo, Texas. I only know its location, because when I googled “Britten USA” that is what I found out about this landmark, according to Wikipedia.

According to Wikipedia, this water tower was rescued from demolition by a truck stop owner, Richard Britten, a while back. He relocated it close to his business and had it deliberately erected in this leaning position to serve as an advertisement for his business. His business has since folded, but this leaning water tower still remains. It mainly serves as a local landmark. Well it caught my eye! Thank you Richard Britten!

I have never heard of this leaning water tower as a landmark in Texas, Gloria Todor.  Thank you for a little education on how this leaning water tower became a landmark in Britten, Texas!

Gloria, I would have to stop and photograph this too, and wonder if it was strong wind or what caused it to lean.

Joan Cox That's what I thought strong wind or the ground is giving way.  I took this photo as we were driving down the highway, we did not stop.  I still use a little hand held camera, Canon, that I carry on road trips just for shots like this.  I could not have gotten this on my cell driving at high speed.

Hello Gloria - I am glad your road trip discovery and some memories help bring this post together.  Additionally, some parts of the internet continue to serve as a source for beginning our search for information.  And while some Texas members were not aware of its existence the rabbit hole searching (online and maybe in person) can move forward.

Carol Williams - I suggest Gloria's post for SCS Second Chance Saturday - perhaps the extra exposure can lead to more answers.  Or additional speculation.

That's an interesting idea on a way to get attention to a business. I'm wondering though if anyone thought his business might be falling down as well! :-)

Hi Gloria,
I've been on many road trips and often see things (while driving) that I'd like to get a shot of, but there's no place to pull off the road. I'm glad you had a driver so you could capture this shot on the move.

Kat Palmiotti funny!  That tower move might have been the beginning of the end for Richard Britten's business.

Carol Williams I have been lucky to have a driver that frees me up to enjoy the scenery.
