More Variety Then A Carrot

There are many basic home styles BUT not so many that a new agent has an excuse for not knowing them. I remember the first time a Buyer asked me if there were any Cape Cod style homes on the market. I didn't know because I did not know what a Cape Cod home looked like when I started in the business. I was embarrised and vowed "that won't happen again".

The photograph above and information about the 30 most popular home styles can be found at the BHG website, just click on this link.

Real Estate newbies can avoid the embarrassment I went through by doing your research before a client  asks them if you have any Country French styled homes on the market.

Good morning Bob. Some never know what they don't know until asked a question. Some eat carrots and some prefer apples. Enjoy your day.

I'd say that was my case Wayne Martin , that I didn't know that there were many style names other than Ranch and Craftsman until the client above mentioned another style. Of course I'd seen all those other styles... I just did not know they all had names of their own.

Becoming a real estate agent means learning a lot of stuff on the go. There's no way to know up front what we do or don't know. But once we realize we DON'T know something, if we're doing our job well, we'll know it next time!

Well said Kat Palmiotti . A good agent is always eager to learn.

Hi Bob... here in the Carolinas we call that a Low Country home. Cape Cods here are much smaller.

Good to know Nina Hollander, Broker (my Love). I had not heard that name before but I'll assume there are regional names for most of the existing styles.

I always thought the term Cape Cod homes where just a New England term Like Rambler in the Northwest. Thanks for sharing and enjoy your week!

Bob "RealMan" Timm there are lots of regional differences. What they call Colonials in the Northeast is nothing like what we would consider a Colonial here. And there are parts of the country that refer to ranch homes as ramblers.

It kind of reminds me of the old children's game "telephone" Nina Hollander, Broker . Your mention of Ranch and Ramblers is a perfect example.

We have so many styles of homes in our country Bob! Another set of criteria as real estate agents we need to know, and we learn this especially when we are working with relocating clients and they explain what styles they have in their areas.! The list is endless but its fun learning so many things in addition to the process of buying and selling. It's what proves are value! We are never done learning it's always a work in progress.

Very well said Dorie Dillard Austin TX . Until the incident I mentioned above I had no idea there were/are so many named styles.

Hello Bob and I have to always make it a point to ask buyers what type of style of house do they want.  So many new buyers are not sure.

In a large metropolis like Denver you probably have all styles in inventory Will Hamm where as in a small City like Minot we never have them all available.

Thirty houses styles is more than I need to know. And, condos and townhouses are not included in the list.

I had most of them memorized before I retired John Juarez but you are right, one doesn't need to know them all PLUS condos and townhouses.
