Know Your Pet Even Before You Get Your Pet

By
Services for Real Estate Pros with Ward County Notary Services 607851

As a parent, when your child asks you for a pet, be sure you learn as much as you can about that pet before you say yes. Chances are, you the parent, are going to be taking care of the pet and not your child. Not knowing the needs of your new pet is why our animal shelters are overflowing and good animals are being euthanized.

Dogs, cats, birds, fish, and even reptiles have unique needs... just like YOU! Take responsibility and know those needs.

We have had many pets in the Timm household but not a one was adopted before each member of the household read two books on each pet. For us that included guinea pigs, hamster, and parakeets.

The subjects of Timmothy's cartoon are guinea pigs. Knowing the proper diet of your pet is essential.

The preferred basic diet for guinea pigs is unlimited amounts of timothy or other low-calcium hay, supplemented with smaller amounts of commercial, high-fiber, timothy-based guinea pig pellets. Vitamin C should be given each day (see below). Hay should be offered free-choice throughout the day.

I grew up with dogs, but now I am blessed with 3 crazy cats. They all have different needs.

Michael Elliott I love cats! I believe I might have been a cat in a previous life, actually! :))) We've had as many as two cats and two dogs in our home, but these days it's just one of each.

Good morning Bob. So many fail to know what they are getting into until it is too late. Some should never have pets. Enjoy your day.

Excellent point - everyone should know what they are getting into before they get a pet. What they eat, how to groom them, how to care for them, how much exercise they need and how, etc etc.

Thanks Kat Palmiotti . My strict policy of reading up on their pet choice never deterred them from moving ahead but it DID make them better pet owners.

One perticular area it helped in was I was panicked when the guinea pig lost it's front teeth , thinking it would starve to death. Tina said the book said this is natural and they would grow back quickly, which they did.

He seemed to easily change his mind about being hungry, I don't think I can do that when I am hungry, haha.

I have to keep myself in check Brian England as sometimes I eat out of certain emotions unrelated to hunger.

Good morning, Bob... the only pets I've ever had are cats and dogs, except for some finches when I was in high school... I learned quickly that birds can generate a lot of dirt.

Dirt, dander, and of course tons of feathers when they are molting Nina Hollander, Broker . Good morning my love 😍.

True story Nina Hollander, Broker , our carpet got wet under the bird cage (a hard place to vacuum) and the seeds started to sprout within a week.

Hi Bob,
I think that was so smart to require getting educated BEFORE getting a pet. Their needs need to fit into your lifestyle. I, as a traveling person, would be a terrible pet owner right now. Maybe someday.

So many people do not recognize themselves as poor candidates for pet adoption Carol Williams so my "hat's off" to you.

Hello Bob, I think sometime kids should rent a pet for 2 weeks and see what they need to do before they take it on full time.

Apr 19, 2024 09:01 AM
Bob "RealMan" Timm

Not a bad idea at all Will Hamm . HOWEVER instead of "renting" they may find a friend that needs a sitter while on vacation. I also think some shelters allow trial adoptions.

Bob "RealMan" Timm  such wisdom in this post, you are so right, Diane & I have been singing this song for a long time. I always loved pets but also understood when I could not have one. I was stationed in the US Army and it would not have been fair to the pet to be left alone so many hours of the day/week and year.... and I did not have my parents near me to take dare of them:))Endre

Good addition to my post Endre Barath, Jr. . My daughter is aften traveling BUT she has close friends that are always eager to help her out. She has not gotten any new pets since her parakeets died and most likely will not until after her summer travels. Being she will be getting married in October and moving to OK  her next pet will be a joint agreement with her soon to be husband.

That actually happened to me as a 7 year old when my parents separated and I couldn’t take care of a Black Lab and the SPCA came and took him away . It is a bad memory for me.

Apr 20, 2024 05:58 AM

That would be a horrible memory for a child especially with a parent separation to deal with at the same time Michael J. Perry . Pets are the best at helping us deal with lifes many traumas.

Great post, Bob "RealMan" Timm. When I was a kid, my mom would get me chicks and ducks around Easter - Real ones. I had them in a box in the basement of my row house. I fed them and was kind to them. Then, one day, my dad said Hannah, tomorrow I am taking them to a farm. I cried he explained it would be best for them, and they would be happy, and I knew he was right. I still cried.  My Mother was not allowed to buy me them anymore but😍 she bought me a turtle it had a flower painted on it

Hannah Williams I remember those days when Ben Franklin stores and Woolworth stores sold live chicks at Easter. They used to dye them bright colors too. I was to little to remember what happened to them BUT I once had a little hatchery and hatched a couple chickens that went out to the farm.

Hi Bob:

I grew up with a bunch of animals around me, and we had cats, dogs and more when our 2 daughters were growing u which was good learning for them. We have rarely not had at least one animal in the house for many years.
