We spent time at the Los Angeles Festival of Books...

Diane and I have been going to the Festival of Books for the past 24+ years. If memory serves me correctly, we only missed the first two... Now with that said this year we did not get a new coffee mug. Usually, we get one every year commemorating our visit to the Festival of Books. This year was a total disappointment.

The marketing was too vague and too discouraging. In the old days if you wanted to see an author you did not have to pay to enter. This year the message was mistakenly focused on, that you cannot get to see a panel or an author unless you pay for a ticket. Really??? False messaging. Sadly, many bought into this message including us.

I told Diane it was just poor English and not clear messaging... we disagreed... on a side note I was right.

So, with that said, let me tell you about our entrance to USC.  We pull into the entrance, customarily I pay the $20 or more to get into the campus of USC at the entrance. This year, I pull out my wallet, but I get told by the gate guard that I should just drive in, and park and I will have to pay via your cell phone. My thought Really???

In we go, where I always park and here are the directions.... Noone is there to help it tells me they are short staffed... who will check if we paid or not? Lucky for USC, Diane is more honest than the average visitor. On a side note, who would be checking if you paid or not?

I had to go back to the car, because I do not memorize my license plate but that is another story.

Anyway, thanks to Diane and the complicated instructions we paid $20+ dollars to park. I bet 50% of the people did not pay. On the way out there was no one monitoring if we paid or not. It would have been easy to do. Show me your phone that you paid. Clearly to me USC as in the University of Southern California probably lost 50% of their normal revenue that they get from the Festival of Books.

Love to have a conversation with the powers to be who dreamed up this stupid idea without having checks and balances??? Thanks to Diane we paid... on the way to the car we were riding in the elevator with another patron I asked if he paid? He said it was so complicated to figure out, so he did not and who ever heard of paying on the way in and not on the way out? Most people expect to pay on the way out:))

So, with that said the books were not the focus this Festival of Books, the authors were either too political or they were unknowns. Sadly, we did not buy any books this is a first time in twenty-four plus years. Then to booth we do not plan on going back tomorrow like we used to do every year.

Hope other people will still enjoy the festival of books...

Michael Elliott nit used to be fun, we would meet real authors, get their books signed, we would meet book sellers who were there to get autographs... then we would meet likeminded people who stood in line to get the books... Endre

Matthew Sturkie, CRS, GRI 909-969-3805  your comment made me smile, there were 90 percent less police, local and campus... there were about 60% fewer people who are there to give help answer question at the parking structures and as well at the campus. so If they saved money on that end they lost it at the other end aka at the parking...Endre

I'm with you - I don't like how things are all app dependent these days.  What if you don't have a smart phone?  Why does it have to be so complicated instead of just simple?  It's even worse when traveling and trying to park in a different state or country.
