Sometimes the most simple question must be asked “Why do people buy?” In this book, buy•ology, the author, Martin Lindstrom, looks to answer this question from a three years of extensive research into neuromarketing and the impact to the subconscious brain.

With 11 chapters that range from discussing the study to learning is “sex” sells, the reader gains some greater insight as to why people buy.  For those in real estate agents this research may provide even greater clarity.

Several chapters I found particularly fascinating. As in Chapter Four entitled “I Can’t See Clearly Now” Subliminal Messaging, Alive and Well.” I did not know subliminal advertising was banned by the National Association of Broadcaster in June of 1958. This was due to one incident (later claimed to be a lie) where subliminal message increased beverage and popcorn consumption, As the fear of the Cold War, many in the public had fears of being subliminally targeted by communists. The chapter continued to various studies and the impact of subliminal advertising. 

Chapter Six: "Say a Little Prayer: Faith, Religion and Brands” looked at how the brain experiences religious feelings or beliefs. There are specific areas of the brain that are activated when thinking about a profound religious experience including the caudate nucleus and insula.

As someone who understands the power of our senses, Chapter 8, “A Sense of Wonder: Selling to Our Senses” confirmed much of what I have witnessed. This chapter suggested that visual images when coupled with another sense such as  hearing or smelling are more memorable. Today that coupling of visual with other senses is called Sensory Branding™.

For real estate agents having freshly baked cookies with the visual impact of the house confirms the power of Sensory Branding™. This is a good read to understand the impact of marketing dollars and how to stretch those limited marketing dollars.
