Some Are Better Than Others at Decluttering

Real Estate Agent with Fathom Realty 8431215

Are you easily distracted?

Are you nostalgic or whimsical?   Do you hate the idea of throwing anything out?  If you answered yes to any of these questions, then you are likely not going to be of great help when and if you need to declutter your home.

My personal rules for keeping something are simple:

1.  Am I ever going to use it again?

2.  Does it still bring me joy or have a cost value?

3.  Does it have emotional value?

If not, OUT IT GOES!

Good morning Michael. As one who has been downsizing for years, decluttering is a necessity without question. Enjoy your day.

Some people are better at decluttering than others. Some people in the same house could be better at decluttering!

Hi Michael... not personally a fan of clutter. And having moved many times throughout my life, I learned a long time ago not to hold on to things I don't need, want or enjoy. Packing and unpacking them can be a pain.

I have seen homes after people have supposedly decluttered and was not impressed, haha.

Easier said than done.  I tend to move it to the cabinets in the garage to make sure I wont use it. ha ha

Decluttering can get very emotional  especially when you’re dealing with memories. Each box takes you down memory lane!  I love that photo!

That's often the problem when memories are involved Joyce Marsh .  It's easier for some than others to let things go.

My gosh this is sooooo true! I once had a client whose home was so cluttered I did not want the listing. I left telling him unless everything on my list was done I would not consider listing his home. I left with a smile knowing I would not be getting that listing. Three weeks later he called me to let me know he did everything on my list (I was skeptical...but went to the home). It was AMAZING....cleaned out, painted, stunning. Sold in one day. He told me he chose me because I was the only agent who was honest with him. HAHAHAHA

Michael, Clearing out clutter does stir up a lot of emotions. We sell at many over 55 communities, and we often witness how challenging this process can be.

You make it sound too easy. We have so much surplus stuff that it is a real challenge.

For me, it is simple.   For others, not so much.   My Mom passed away in May, she was 90.    It took us 6 weeks to empty the house, stuff there since 1950s.

I clear out the basement and the garage based on the layer of dust on something Throw it out before even giving it a thought.

Oh, Michael!  You make it sound so very easy!  At this point, I really do need professional help with my own declutter efforts. I think I get hung up on the emotional attachments

Patricia Kennedy I get that!  We are all different in that category, I believe.  If it makes you happy, keep it !
