How to Lose Weight Naturally, and Keep it Off

After having some serious health issues in 2022 and early 2023, the message was clear to me: If I wanted to give myself a chance of being around a while longer, I needed to eat healthy and lose weight.

I used to eat 2-3 delicious cheesesteaks weekly. While I miss doing that, I would rather wear my new, better fitting clothes and feel fit and be healthy.

Now, with all the pills and weight loss injection options, I have chosen the natural route, which for me, is better long-term.

After losing 70+ pounds, and keeping it off, here is my advice:

 

1.  Stop saying things like, "It is so hard to lose weight".    This is an excuse, and it  really isn't hard if you want it bad enough.  Be accountable, only you control what you eat.

2.   Change your eating habits.   Stop eating big portions.  Cut down the alcohol intake.  Stay away from unhealthy carbs.

3.  Nutrition is definitely more important than exercise, for weight loss.  It all starts in the kitchen.

4.  Plan your healthy meals in advance.  Otherwise, you are doomed.   

5.  When hungry in between meals, have healthy fruits and nuts.  I love oranges, red grapes, almonds and pistachios.  Again, portion size is  important.

6.  Google "Heart healthy foods", and pick and eat your faves with each meal   This is crucial.

7.  Plan your reward meal. My goal is to have 20 very healthy meals weekly, and one reward meal.  I typically do not go crazy with the reward meal, unless I earned it.  I call it "reward" instead of "cheat" because of mindset.  If you fail  to plan, you will have more than one.  

8.  Choose health as opposed to temporary food euphoria.  For me, cheesesteaks were food euphoria.

9.  Weigh yourself daily.   Log it somewhere. 

10.  If you have not exercised in a while, slowly incorporate that in to your schedule.

Thanks for the encouragement, I needed this today. I have been struggling to lose weight and only seen it go the wrong way for over a year. Everything I have tried in the past has not worked. But getting both knees replaced last year had hit the workout/exercise regime, now with the weather getting better I need to focus. Reducing portion size is a big one for me and one I can work on. We do eat very healthily, but wine can be cut back also. Focus, and have a plan.

Hi Michael,
When I want to lose weight, I remember 3 things:
1) My stomach is only as big as my fist. I don't need to eat portions any bigger than that
2) Eat ONLY when I am hungry.
3) Get some exercise every day

I gave up meat about 15 years ago. Although I miss a good pastrami on rye with deli mustard...I would rather look the incredibly handsome way I do now.

I have gotten rid off our scale so there is no problem stressing about the weight...:) I cook relatively speaking healthy and we drink wine with dinner and I do not mind the calories of wine... I am old and when my number is up I am ready... p.s.: we have a dog that likes being walked daily and that helps with burning calories too:)Endre

Such great advice and I am impressed that you were able to lose over 70 lbs, wow!  I hope that I never have 70 lbs to lose, haha.  Staying away from processed foods and sugar are also good things to do!

Thanks, Brian England .   Sugars are rare in my diet.  I cannot remember the last processed food I ate.   Now I just need a new hip and I'll be close to perfect!!
