Wordless Wednesday...Bluebird Update

By
Home Stager

It’s time for an update on our bluebird boxes!

If you follow my blog then you know that Larry and I monitor bluebird boxes at Kickerillo-Mischer Preserve. We also have a bluebird box at home.

Our most prolific box is on its second brood for the season. There were 5 eggs and from what we can tell 4 hatched (on Monday, 4/22)

We have 2 boxes with baby birds however one has baby chickadees (we think) and the other has wrens, both cavity nesters. We had to insert our wireless endoscope in the wren nest to see what was in the nest.

( Baby chickadees hatched last week.)

Wren's nests are different from bluebirds and chickadees in they look like one big mess.

Our nest at home is on its second brood and a second egg was laid today! (Tuesday 4/23)

We’re hoping another nest will be built soon in our fourth nest at Kickerillo. All of our findings are reported to Nestwatch.

We love this time of year when we are given the opportunity to observe and assist Mother Nature.

I so love this time of year with the birds.  Had a tiny mockingbird last night shoeing a way a big Grackle, to protect its nest. Thanks for sharing and enjoy your week!

Bill Salvatore - East Valley I think we must have a mockingbird nest in one of our bushes but we're not able to locate it. We don't want to get too close.

Kat Palmiotti we love it. We've thought about monitoring more at other parks but it would have to be in the right area.

Amazing how those bundles of skin and bones turn into such beautiful birds.

I agree Nick Vandekar, 610-203-4543 The fledglings are scruffy and grey. It's remarkable how quickly they grow and are as big as their parents.

Love your posts about the Bluebirds.  We rarely have them around here in central Nebraska.  We have mostly dang turtle doves and they tend to chase other off on top of being quite noisy.

Jeff Dowler, CRS Thank you. It seems as if the ice and snow we had in 2021 were hard on mother nature. It's taken a bit for the birds to get back in full swing.
