A Journey Through Time

North Wilkesboro's past comes alive as you stroll down the historic streets of its downtown area. The Wilkes Heritage Museum is a treasure trove of local history, showcasing artifacts and exhibits that tell the story of the region's indigenous people, early settlers, and industrial boom. Take a moment to admire the Doc Watson Mural, a vibrant tribute to the legendary folk musician who called Wilkesboro home.

Outdoor Adventures Await

The Yadkin River Greenway, a paved path that winds along the Yadkin River, is perfect for a leisurely walk, bike ride, or jog. For the more adventurous, Cub Creek Mountain Bike Trails offer a challenging and rewarding experience for cyclists of all skill levels.

Relive Racing History at North Wilkesboro Speedway

Gearheads and NASCAR fans, rejoice! North Wilkesboro is home to the iconic North Wilkesboro Speedway, a historic short track that recently roared back to life after a long hiatus. The track, which opened in 1947, hosted prestigious NASCAR Cup Series races for decades, witnessing legendary drivers like Dale Earnhardt Sr. and Richard Petty battle it out. In 2024, the speedway underwent a significant repaving project, and it triumphantly returned to the NASCAR schedule, hosting the All-Star Race for the second consecutive year. So, if you're visiting during race season, be sure to snag tickets and experience the heart-pounding action firsthand! You can even visit the speedway to learn more about its rich history and upcoming events.

Beyond the Beaten Path

North Wilkesboro boasts a surprising number of wineries and distilleries. Take a day trip to sip on award-winning wines or sample handcrafted spirits at local distilleries like Call Family Distillers.

For a unique cultural experience, visit the Merle Watson Garden of the Senses, a tranquil space designed to stimulate all five senses. This beautiful garden honors the legacy of another Wilkes County musical icon, Doc Watson's son, Merle.

Festivals and Events

North Wilkesboro comes alive throughout the year with a variety of festivals and events. Immerse yourself in the sights, sounds, and tastes of the Brushy Mountain Apple Festival, or tap your toes to bluegrass music at MerleFest, one of the largest music festivals of its kind in the country. Don't miss the charming Downtown Art Walk, where you can browse works by local artists and enjoy live music.

Hello John - my dad was a fan of watching car races.  While I wasn't as enthusiastic about the activity, I did learn more about U.S. geography because of it.  Unlike some of the other North Carolina cities you have introduced in your posts, I did recognize Wilkesboro.
