Reflections From My Food Poisoning Experience

Education & Training with Although I'm retired, I love sharing my knowledge and learning from other real estate industry professionals.

"Every trial carries its own treasure. Even in the shadows of sickness, there are lessons waiting to be discovered and carried into the light."

I am one of those people who believes lessons lurk everywhere, even in sickness. Reflecting on my recent experience with food poisoning confirmed some life lessons.

I was reminded to:

  1. Be Patient: Dealing with the discomfort and disruption from food poisoning is horrible... and messy! I had to "wait it out" and let time do its thing. There is no rushing it. We all have the ability to endure adverse conditions and recover from them. It's a test of patience as we give ourselves the time to recover.

  2. Be willing to drop everything for self-care: Probably most of you have experienced food poisoning at one time or another. For those of you who haven't, trust me, nothing else matters except dealing with the present and getting better. Such experiences remind us of our vulnerability and the importance of being flexible enough to take care of ourselves. Sometimes, this means dropping ALL other plans. For instance, I had an out-of-town visitor fly in for a six-day visit. I got sick on the 2nd night. Plans for the next 4 days flew out the window.  All I wanted to think about was taking care of myself.

  3. Have Gratitude for My Health: Recovering from an illness like food poisoning left me with a renewed appreciation for my relatively good health. It is also a wake-up call to do what I can to take care of myself on a daily basis.

  4. Appreciate My Mental Resilience: The experience confirmed my mental resilience. How you handle stress and discomfort can affect how long the healing process takes.

  5. Appreciate Who My Real Friends Are: Illness reveals a lot about who your real friends are. They check in on you and ask if you need anything. What's better than having people you can count on through thick and thin?

All of this got me thinking maybe I should become a vegetarian. I've never heard of anyone getting food poisoning from vegetables.

Wishing you all good health!

Oh do I feel your pain. My wife got food poisoning while we were on vacation.  We were fortunate that the hotel was sympathetic and gave here simple meals for a couple of days while she recovered.

Hi Ed Silva, 203-206-0754
It was 2 days before I wanted to eat anything. After food poisoning, I am suspect of just about everything.

I am sorry to hear you had food poisoning but am glad you are feeling better. And actually they seem to recall vegetables from time to time due to bacteria/etc. We take a risk every time we eat something!

You're right, Kat Palmiotti
We do take a risk whenever we eat. I'm glad I only at 2 of those meatballs instead of all 5. It could have been way worse.

Carol Williams Food poisoning is horrible !!!  I prayed a lot ..  I wonder if the vegetables are deep-fried? I must admit I do not eat as much meat as I used to -  meat used to be an everyday meal now it is a rariety

Hi Hannah Williams
I don't eat a lot of meat, and when I do it's usually chicken. I just happened to eat meatballs this time. Glad I only at 2 of them instead of all 5.

Carol- wonderful thoughts and that's what I call making lemonade out of lemons. Larry and I went camping once and we both came home sick as dogs. I think it was the water. At any rate, I had the pleasure of spending a week on the john.

take care of yourself!!!

Hi Kathy Streib
I think I got sick from water one time too. We were on our way back from a vacation. There were 3 of us and the only thing we had that was the same was the water. That's scary when you think of a contaminated water supply.

I think my food poisoning was from some meatballs. I'm just glad I'm a light eater and only at 2 of them, instead of all 5.

p.s.: to change the subject since you are a golfer... I saw this on Instagram... the average golfer walks 900 miles and the average golfer drinks 22 gallons of alcohol. that translates to 41 mile per gallon, so you are doing good:)Endre

Food Poisoning is the worst. Such a bummer it all came down when you had a friend in town visiting. I was so surprised to hear about it, rather than stories of all the fun stuff you were enjoying with your friend. Like you said, nothing you can do but deal with it. I had it years ago and hope and pray -  never again.

Never again is my hope too, Anna "Banana" Kruchten

Sorry to hear you suffered Carol.  It makes you want to stay home more often and soak those veges in vinegar to remove the pesticides even if you think you are buying organic.

I have returned to buying at the local fresh fish market to be sure is caught not farmed fish.

The butcher who actually can determine his source of meat.  Genetically modified food is already on the shelves.   Check the hellman's mayo ingredients since they sold the company to china....bioengineered WHAT?  Now a Dukes customer.

Hi Eileen,
I've never gotten food poisoning from my own cooking. Sadly, this was from what should be a trusted restaurant. I'm glad I only ate 2 of those 5 meatballs!

Carol, Sorry to hear of your recent health incident.  Such events stop you in your track as you pointed out. I hope your friends who were visiting were understanding.  Yes such events make you reconsider certain foods down the road.  Hopefully this will never happen to you again.  Take care.

Hi Gloria Todor
I'm not sure how we protect ourselves from such risks when we go out to eat. It's been a very long time since that has happened. The last time was probably 45 years ago after having seafood. This was meatballs. Good thing I only at 2 of the 5. I threw up the 2 I ate and threw out the leftovers. 😬

Hi Carol Williams - so sorry to learn about your recent food poisoning experience. Having a true friend when you need it, is a lot to be thankful for. The lessons you learned shows how optimistic you are, especially when you're going (or) went through a bad spell.

We can't assume the FDA is looking out for us when it comes to our food or medicine. We have to be vigilant and take responsibilities for our own bodies.

I hope all the unpleasantries are gone and you never experience food poisoning again.

It's been over 45 years since I last had food poisoning. I guess we kind of take that chance every time we eat out. I've never gotten sick from my own cooking.  It's a good thing I'm a fairly light eater or I probably would have been much sicker.
