Ask An Ambassador: Absent, But Not Forgotten

In real estate one of the phrases you'll hear is "staying top of mind".  You want people to remember you, remember where you work, remember to call you when they know someone can use your services.

We've been part of this community for almost 18 years.

We've seen some of your young ones go from pre-school to college, watched you change brokerages, go through some of the biggest events in life both positive and negative.  We've vicariously traveled all over the world.  We know about differences in real estate practices, techniques we can borrow for our local market, and seen a long, long list of potential magic super shiny silver bullets.

And along with all those things, we've seen many people come and go (and come and go and....).

People leave ActiveRain for a host of reasons.

Maybe blogging wasn't for them.  Or maybe blogging worked so well for them they didn't have time for blogging.

Maybe they needed an intervention for how much time ActiveRain was taking.

Maybe real estate took a back seat to other life needs.

Or maybe real estate just wasn't the career they thought it would be.

Or maybe other means of generating business worked better for them.

Bottom line, lots of people come and go from this community.  Some of us have been here for a long, long time and have no intent of walking out the door.

The connections formed over the years last, whether one is still putting the Active in ActiveRain, or have moved on to other pastures.

My go to referral network is filled with former Rainers.  Doesn't matter to me that they're no longer here because they showed me enough about how they treat other people, what they know about the business, that I can trust them to do the right thing, that given any opportunity to send them a referral, I'm willing to stake my own reputation on them getting the job done right.

As I look around Facebook, LinkedIn, X/Twitter, and other places, the names are familiar, even if I no longer see them in the Rain.  Absent, but not forgotten.

Until next Tuesday, just Ask An Ambassador if you need help,

Bill & Liz aka BLiz

Hello Bill (and Liz too) - you're right, while some members are no longer "seen" in this community, they are not necessarily forgotten.  It's good to remember the positive aspects found over the years.

There are certain people in this business that are one word name celebrities, I say "Roger" and most any long timer would know who we were talking about.

Liz and Bill Spear  : Good times, bad times. You know we have had our share, but many of us have stood fast and stayed in this community. Perhaps we have taken a short vacation but many of us remain. There are many that have moved on of course but I have chosen to stay with my beloved familiar faces

Participation and need levels change over the years.  I don't leave comments the way I used to, but more life demands (more cats, more dogs, more bees, etc.) means something has to give.

Good afternoon Bill,

You are so right... just because some Rainers have come and gone and stayed gone doesn't mean because they are absent they are forgotten.

There are quite a few people that are absent that are still my first choice for a referral if the opportunity presents.

Bill- I love your post!!!  When I revisit old posts of mine I see faces who are no longer on the site. But yes, they are not forgotten. I also see them on Facebook, X, and Instagram. I love the relationships we've made here. I love learning about your bees and I love knowing that if I have a question, I can go to you.

I've done the same on posts here, and Facebook memories.  I haven't seen ____ in a long time!  And some of those missing have returned lately, which is great to see.   We have our go to people, lots of expertise in this community that we know we can reach out to, and the fact that sharing is such a big part of the culture is part of the appeal.  More than happy to share what I know about bees, flowers, Chis or cats :)

Great post and reminder to stay connected.  I've been MIA, but busy with business, speaking and teaching.  It's great to see everyone.  I know what you mean. So many people who aren't here but definitely not forgotten.  Until next time....

The turmoil of the sales has greatly impacted the support this platform once enjoyed, and many have left to find their business elsewhere. While not active, some of the absent members have still stopped by on occasion just to see who's doing what but not long enough to interact.

Ed, we've watched people leave for many reasons, while the core reasons that have kept us here have been constant:  it's the other members, not who owns the site, that matters to most of us.

There are so many people we have met over the last dozen and a half years. They are remembered, and April's contest was a nice way to reconnect.

Certainly many, many people have come across our paths here in the Rain.

Absolutely! Just because someone stops posting/commenting here does not mean they are forgotten. And we can still send referrals their way and still stay in touch.

I love the feeling of ActiveRain feeling like a family and some of my favorite people to follow are the ones who share their family life with us, whether it be kids or grandkids, and being able to see them grow over the years.

It always amazes me how many years we've been here and how we have seen some of the kids grow so much!

Bill I always feel 'blessed' to have had the opportunity to meet so many amazing people all over the country from almost day one. Just because some of us aren't as active as we used to be doesn't mean we don't keep thinking of folks and sending referrals as they pop up. A thought just occurred to me - how different this past 18 years would have been had we all not gotten to know each other. It's been a gift!!

I've met a fair number of Rainers in person.  They've always matched up with what I expected them to be based on their online persona.  It's definitely not like meeting a stranger.

Well, I needed an intervention. Instead of being a Realtor who blogged, I became a blogger who sold an occasional house. But then I missed you guys, so I'm back but really trying out moderation.

Finding that right balance can be a challenge.  Someone I'm married to used to give me some grief for how much time I spent in the Rain :)

Liz and Bill Spear - I appreciate how you formulated your words of remembrance for past and present ActiveRain members who became more than just social writers. Referrals are what keeps us in business. They are tighter than real family in ways in which a thriving business counts. Building strong relationships is the gossip truth that paves the way to organic success.

This particular paragraph "My go to referral network is filled with former Rainers" reminds me of The Golden Rule. Some, like you live this platform's ideology; others crave points. And to be fair, some want both. However, it's the people we meet whether in person or virtually who are fondly remembered to whom we are most grateful. Whether giving or receiving help, this is the secret sauce and the recipe for success.

Congratulations for another awesome FEATURE post. Also, thank you for your leadership. You continue to serve in the Ambassador role in true form that represents the highest level of Best Practices.

Patricia Feager, MBA, CRS, GRI,MRP , the character of the people that I refer to matters, and that evidence is often right here in the Rain.  I love being able to see how people interact and prove what is important to them.  I get a newer person under 500k driving for points, (I did the same back in the day), but at a certain point we should realize that points aren't the end all/be all of our presence here.  It's the things that we do that coincidentally provide points are what makes our phone ring from customers or referrals.  I'll keep doing the best I can to support this community.  Thanks for the appreciation!
