Points are a source of never-ending conversation, here in the rain.  People want to know why they didn't get theirs, why they didn't get enough, when they're going to get theirs, why someone has more than they do, blah, blah, blabbity blah, blah, blah.

Aren't y'all tired of it all?  I know, I know, easy for me to say, I have a lot of points.  Sure, for those of you still chasing that half-million mark for a free-account, I get it.  You want that brass ring, and there's a purpose in your chase.  But for the rest of y'all, the points are secondary, or tertiary... maybe fourteentiary. (did I just make up a word?).  I don't do this for the points, I think the content of my blog posts (or lack of content) should oughta make that pretty clear.

I do this if, and when, I feel like it.  When the muse strikes me with her hammer, or a feather, then I pull out my keyboard and run my fingers across the keyboard and try to put some words together that make some sense.  When the muse hides from me, as she often does, sometimes I still write, but you can tell when that happens.  Those are the posts where I get zero to one comment.  Sometimes it's from a relative, or just someone who's taken pity on me cause they can't stand to see me sitting here sniffling to myself in a corner.

But points?!  We don't need no steenking points?

"Then why?", you might ask "Do you post a Feature Photo, at the top, if you don't care about points!?"  Well, that's an excellent question.  While I don't give a sp!t about the points associated with the Featured Post, I do still like the recognition that comes with a Featured Post.  It's one of those Sally Field moments, you know?!  "They like me, they really like me!"

Blog like nobody's reading!

Hi Alan,
Like you, I'm beyond needing those points. I don't know if a Featured post means they like me or just what I have to say. Either way works for me. Getting a Feature for shedding more light on other good posts gives me all the glory I need.

It's like the lottery, can't win without a ticket, and supposedly, can't get featured without a Featured Photo, so might as well give it a shot.

I know roughly how many points I have, but wouldn't know (nor care) if I got stiffed on comment points, or posting points.  Passed the 500k mark long ago, and also know that being #1 in Ohio for points has given me zero additional business.  Now those evergreen posts I've written, THOSE do bring me some $$$.

Can't win without a ticket, and can't get featured (although I have seen the occasional feature without one) without a feature photo.  So I'm gonna post one on the off-chance that the feature faeries will look kindly upon me.

Good evening Alan,

I love your photo but your title is what grabbed me! Liz and Bill Spear (Bill's) comment made me chuckle because he is right "It's like the lottery, can't win without a ticket, and supposedly, can't get featured without a Featured Photo, so might as well give it a shot." When Ben Kinney came back and wanted us to have a more uniform look with posts, I actually think now it does have a more professional look to our site. How long does it take to come up with something eye catching to lure readers in? I'm way past 500,000 points and could care about the points at this juncture...its about grabbing the attention from the community I serve and I've found by reposting on Facebook I get traction and then can post on my blog on my website. There is a method to my madness!

It's always great to have a post featured.  It's a sense of accomlishment and maybe others like what you wrote/  Maybe a point well taken, deserved.  It's fun to create an intereseting post with a photo that leaves others scratching their heads!

I like to know that I am consistent - it has nothing to do with the points as such, but the points prove to me (and just to me) that I have been blogging.  It's nice to see the points stack up as a statement to me that I have been consistent

Alan- one of your bests!!! I tell others that when I started, I had no idea that points were involved. And without looking under my name, I couldn't tell you today how many points I have. When Ben introduced the feature photo, I thought  "I don't want to sound presumptuous and include a feature photo thinking I'll get featured" 

Now I like the look of having Feature photos.

You should post the feature photo that is carefully selected like a thumbnail for a video or the lead in image on your MLS listing razzle dazzle. Not just to be considered for a feature slot, but because without it, kinda looks lonely and uninviting. 

The "POINT" is you want the marketing to be the most effective possible and for your online viewer to click, come on in from the curb and take a look around. Then after that presentation, here is another one if you have time to binge Alan May !

I like points and  have yet to be featured but there is still hope, that is why the stars in the sky are beyond our grasp but we still can reach out.

Again, blogging for me on Active Rain continues to allow me three desired results: #1 - Getting to know other agents here in AZ and in other states for possible referrals; #2 - Sharing good information potentially from a different perspective and the feature suggests the information is good; #3 - The more one writes, the better one thinks; the better one think the more one writes.

For me, Leanne Smith, most of those AR referrals came from out of state.  Referrals that I would never have had a shot at without Active Rain.

I started here before you had to have points to have a free account. They were all free. By the time that came along, I had plenty of points.

I did think it was fun to get to a million, and it was fun to get to be #1 in Idaho. But that lost its appeal when it was no longer a challenge. The two agents who were ahead of me pretty much quit posting, so... 

I don't know what's wrong with Idaho agents that they don't get with the program, but that's their business. I happen to believe AR has value for everyone associated with the real estate industry. 

So - there's my long way around the barn to say: I agree with you.

Same here.  When I first arrived, all accounts were free, and by the time they started charging... I was firmly entrenched.

You're not wrong, in that the east coast and west coast seem to have latched on to raining, but the middle of the country doesn't seem to have paid quite as much attention.
