I Work Hard for My Money!

Real Estate Agent with Coldwell Banker Realty ~ 512.750.6899

This month Kathy Streib and Debe Maxwell, CRS are co-hosting the May Active Rain Challenge:   "Why Choose you?” It’s such an appropriate topic because the NAR’s decision affects each and every one of us. Thank you for coming up with a relevant topic.

I've always been drawn to the concept of a Vision/Dream Board, especially in my early real estate career. From the very beginning, I've found that a Vision/Dream Board serves as a powerful tool for manifesting both personal and professional desires through visualization.

This year like every year I created my vision board at the beginning of the year. After the turmoil of the release of the NAR’s decision, I went back to review my vision board and my written goals for the year.

I remember when I started in real estate in 1991 as an anxious, single mom I came across this quote by Nido Qubein:

“Your present circumstances don’t determine where you go; they merely determine where you start.”

I think it applies now as much as it did then. I remember taking the Floyd Wickman courses when I first started, it was stressed to determine our own Value Proposition. Once we understood what that looked like we were to brand ourselves and market the heck out of ourselves.

I made the decision to market to the community I lived in as it was a growing subdivision and would be the size of a good area to geographically farm. It didn’t happen overnight; it took sponsoring events, becoming the "Source of the Source," giving back to the community and as Barbara Todaro always says: “Market like you mean it!”

The NAR decision is miss-understood by so many consumers because of the headlines touting “Sellers Save by Paying Lower Commissions,” “Buyer Agents Will be Gone” and so many more! I’m finding, I have to educate so many of the residents in my community on its implications. Since I have established my role as the “Source of the Source,” my email and texts are full of questions looking for answers.

My role as the “Go to Realtor®” in my community continues to set me apart from other Realtors®. I’m known as “The Trusted Realtor®" and wear many hats for my role working with my clients. I work hard for my money, as many know!

Hello Dorie - you can't go wrong when singing the anthem by Donna Summer or Barbara Todaro.  The message they repeat go far in action and are meaningful in ways beyond mere words.

Hi Dorie, You inspired me this morning!  I loved the song too!  I going to start listening to this daily!!  It has been a long time since I heard it.  I too pretty much started out as a single mom, and now over 20 years later still in the business.  I'm starting over in a new area, but know the basics to go back to.  It really doesn't matter what area you work, you either know the business or you don't!  You definitely know the business and are the go to for your area!  Have a great day and congrats on the feature!

There can be anxiety in the beginning years of being a Realtor.  I became a single mother, at the end of my first year.  Fortunately, I had unbelievable luck, helped along with kind agents in my office, who took me under their wing.  And, like you, I began by establishing a "farm," in my neighborhood.

Dorie, I love that quote.  If you'd have told me 40 years ago at age 60 I'd have spent 20 years working dual as engineer/real estate and be close to retiring on a mountaintop, I'd have thought no way any of that will happen.  I was expecting to have a long career in the Navy instead, but things change, we adjust, we learn, and we adjust some more.  Whatever happens with the NAR, I'll adjust as I need to and keep on keeping on.  And I know you'll be doing the same in Canyon Creek!
