LOST SOCK MEMORIAL DAY

HONORING ALL THE SOCKS NO LONGER WITH US TODAY

Socks

It's Lost Sock Memorial Day! In the universe of crazy holidays and observances, this has to be one of the oddest ever!  Thank you, Linda Blumenthal for the reminder. For some reason this particular day has always "tickled me." And I don't even wear socks!  By the way, in case you didn't know, yesterday May 8th, was officially "no sock" day!

The idea behind Lost Sock Memorial Day is to honor all those unmatched socks in one's sock drawer, although I could find no information on who thought up this holiday. There are those who never throw out any unmatched socks hoping the matching one shows up one day. If you're one of those people why not use today to sort out all your socks and just throw out the ones that don't have a "sole mate."

"Sadly, my socks are like snowflakes. No two are alike."

-- Graham Parker

One of the great mysteries of the universe is where do those socks disappear? I'm not a big sock wearer but when I do, I always take two off as I have two feet and I don't ever wear just one sock. And yet, every so often I take washed/dried socks out of my dryer and one has gone missing. How does that happen?

Wondering how many socks get lost? According to a recent study about socks, the average person loses 1,264 socks in the wash in their lifetime. That works out to 16 pairs a year, or about $3,200 worth of socks by the time you die. In the US alone, some 5.2 billion socks are lost each year! Do the math and you find Americans are losing up to $10 billion in socks every year.

"Happiness is finding that lost sock."

-- Anonymous

For those of you out there who regularly lose socks, I've dug up some great information on how to organize your socks.  From Martha Stewart (who else, after all?) here's a video on organizing your sock drawer.

And did you hear? You can even send a greeting card for Lost Sock Day!  If you know someone who regularly loses socks, why not send them a card today?

I am cracking up, yes, I have lost socks, I have two different puma socks I wear together, one black one grey, no one ever notices. I do not know where they go, inside sweaters, or sheets, or they just disappear.

Nick Vandekar, 610-203-4543 hi Nick... they disappear here in my house, as well. They go from my husband's feet to the hamper to the washer to the dryer. And yet, every so often a sock or two go missing never to be seen again.

Nina I am one of those people "who never throw out any unmatched socks hoping the matching on shows up one day."  For some uncontrollable STRANGE reason, I can't seem to part with them ...... LOL

George Souto hi George... I also keep the single sock since I buy my husband daily socks in bulk. That way if another is lost or has a hole, I can match them up.

Hi Nina- I wish you could see how hard I'm laughing!!! I just finished folding laundry and ended up with a missing sock for Larry and for me. As they say..."they'll turn up in the wash."

Kathy Streib hi Kathy... really bizarre how you take off two socks, put them in the hamper, then into the washer and dryer and at the end of it all, a sock goes missing!

Thank you very much, Nina, for adding smiles to our faces with this post. I recently found a long lost sock within a folded t-shirt.

Roy Kelley hi Roy... I've yet to ever find a missing sock folded inside a t-shirt or anything else. And I don't wash them with towels or sheets, so I know they are not in there either!

Nina, I definitely wear socks in the winter, and on cold days in the spring/fall.   But, cannot remember losing any.  I saw this on FB, and tickled me too.

Joan Cox hi Joan... I virtually never wear socks unless they are fluffy ones in the house in the winter. I've worn out some socks, but never lost one of mine. Chris' socks... a whole other matter!

Hello Nina, while I do prefer to refer to those mismatched socks as 'Boot Socks'.  No one knows the difference until I forget and take my boots off at a showing.  lol

May 09, 2024 02:26 PM
Nina Hollander, Broker

Mark Don McInnes, Sandpoint-Idaho too funny, Mark. But you've made a great point that the unmatched socks don't need to go to waste. You just need to live where boots are worn frequently.

Those single socks hang out on top of my dryer, waiting to find a mate. I have no idea where the runaway sock has gone. Sidenote: the younger generation doesn't care if socks match or not! My teenage granddaughter wears mis-matched socks all the time.

How cute!! I haven't lost a sock in a very long time, and I'm not sure why, and I'm sure it has nothing at all to do with me being organized or taking particular care.
