Plants don't always do what is expected

Last year, we bought some verbena to put in our front bed alongside the path to our door. These are an annual, especially in our area of the country. They were not cheap, in fact they were the opposite, but they did really well, spreading out and being a very effective and bright ground cover with these wonderful pops of scarlet all over.

I had just left them over the winter, expecting to have to pull them out this Spring. But, they never looked as if they had died off completely. Some did, and I pulled one out that was completely dead. But, as my tulips blossomed and the died off I noticed that the Verbena were doing really well.

I have a friend who is a master gardener, having completed the program at Longwood Gardens. I ask her about what plants to choose and where to put them. When she visited I pointed out the verbena and she commented that with a wall behind them and a concrete path in front the bed may have stayed warm enough to protect them from any frost damage.

So, I was thrilled to see a spot or two of red which then developed quickly into a carpet of red flowers. As an annual this is not what was supposed to happen, but it did and it is giving us a real bargain now for our "expensive purchase" last year. If they continue to keep coming back, they will become the bargain of the plants.

The moral of the story is, just like plants, our customers don't always do what we think they will either, but sometimes that can be a good thing and we just need to go with the flow.

Hi Nick- let's face it, Mother Nature will do what she wants to do, when she wants to do it. Very happy that your verbena returned with smiling faces.

In Mid April , I helped my daughter plant some perennials in the front yard in a new house we bought on 3/18. As we were doing this we did see a plant that was trying to pop thru to the surface , but didn’t know what it was . Three weeks later we had 40-50 Wild Ferns that were 18+ inches high . I’ve dug up and transplanted 25 of them so far and need to do at least another 20 ….

Good morning Nick,

You are so right! The analogy of or plants and clients is spot on. Clients don't always do what we think they will do, just like plants, but sometimes that can be a good thing and we just need to go with the flow.

Michael J. Perry ferns are attractive in the right spot, but they do spread themselves out.

Dorie Dillard Austin TX sometimes we need to trust our client, and follow instructions seeing where it will lead.

So very true! I purchase an expensive tomato plant from our big well know store about a year ago. The plant never produced a single tomato, we had to discard. So I decided to buy a less expensive one from a different well known store, and oh boy, I have so many tomatoes coming up, that I am going to make hot salsa. Now I am planting the mini roses, and they sure are producing more mini roses. I may buy a different color today. You are correct in the moral of your story:) Enjoy your weekend, Katina

Patricia Feager, MBA, CRS, GRI,MRP as you drive down the road to our house you can see this carpet of red among the bushes.

Katina Hargrove 352-551-0308 we had both last year a plant from costco at $17 which gave us a decent number of large tomatoes and a smaller one my wife got from a farmers market at half the price which inundated us with grape tomatoes all season.
