Am I Worth Dying For?

Today is Memorial Day 2024. It is a day that many observe each and every day.

Good Morning Ladies, Gentlemen & Veterans

On behalf of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #7608 and American Legion Post #211, we welcome you in the observance of Memorial Day 2024.

I am Douglas Dawes, Commander of Georgetown’s Rene J Gagnon American Legion Post #211.

As we gather here today, our hearts beat heavy with both sorrow and gratitude in honor of the brave souls who made the ultimate sacrifice for our nation. Memorial Day is not merely a day off from work or a chance to enjoy a barbecue; it's a solemn reminder of the price of freedom which was paid for with the blood, sweat, and tears of those who gave everything for our country.

Every year, we gather together, as a community, to remember and reflect. We remember and honor those who never returned home, the ones who left behind families, dreams, and futures. Their absence is a stark reminder of the cost of war, a cost measured not just in numbers, but in the irreplaceable loss of our loved ones.

As we stand here today and use our minds-eye to envision and remember their courage, let us also remember the families they left behind. The mothers who weep silently, into their pillows. The fathers who stand stoically to hide their pain. The spouses who hold onto memories with trembling hands, and the children who grew up without a parent's guiding hand. Their sacrifice is often overlooked. Yet, their burden is heavy, & their loss is profound. Every day is Memorial Day for them.

Yet, even in the face of their sorrow, the flame of hope continues to brightly burn. This flame is the flame of freedom, the torch, passed from one generation to the next. The flame sparks within and sets afire the spirit of service and sacrifice. This spirit inspires our young men and women to stand up to defend our nation from all enemies, both foreign and domestic, knowing full well the dangers that could be waiting for them.

Today, as we pay tribute to our fallen, let us also renew our commitment to honoring their legacy. Let us strive to be worthy of their sacrifice by cherishing the freedoms they fought to preserve. Let us work together to build a nation and a community where their sacrifice was not in vain.  A place where justice, equality, and liberty prevail.

In the words of Abraham Lincoln, "It is for us the living, rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced."

May we never forget the price of freedom, it is not free. May we never take our freedom for granted. Freedom does not come with an ironclad guarantee. Freedom is fought for each and every day. May we always remember and honor the brave souls who gave their all for our country. We must never forget our combat theater nurses. For them, there can never be enough appreciation expressed or shown for their care.

From the first time I heard this prayer by First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, it haunted me and still does, to this day. It asks a very poignant question.

"Dear Lord, Lest I continue My complacent way Help me to remember Somewhere out there A soldier died for me today. As long as there be war, then I must Ask and answer “Am I worth dying for?”

This is a driving question within me. I hope it is a driving force within each of you. Do we conduct ourselves in a manner that answers the question?

Am I Worth Dying For?

On this Memorial Day, remember this…They thought we were worth dying for. Now, let each of us display our worth. There was one who was willing to die for you.

Thank you.

Good morning Doug. So beautifully said. Thank you for your words. Unfortunately, many need to wake up and face the music, because for many the answer to "am I worth dying for?", the answer is "NO"!

When I read Georgetown, I thought you might be in DC and I might get to meet you when I am there in November, haha.

I love your message, Doug. You and I are aligned in that thought....are we worth it? Are we living a life that honors those who sacrificed theirs for ours?

Good Morning Wayne Martin

Unfortunately, there is an ugly underbelly that flows through the nation. That's why we all need to stand and combat it.

This is what Memorial Day is about. It's a small piece of time spent to honor those who gave all they had. You are right, it is a sobering message. We owe a debt to them that we must pay back by standing for freedom and against tyranny.

Good Morning Kathy Streib

That is a haunting question that we do have to ask and answer. Am I Worthy of Dying For? It becomes our duty and obligation to carry the torch of freedom and remember them.
