 Uncharacteristic Nighttime Lights in CT

This past week has been unusual with weather for many parts of the world. Scientists were warning of strong solar storms that would create issues on our planet, some of which could not be controlled.

In the Midwest gps systems that farmers needed for spring planting were affected as the flares that hit us were largely geomagnetic.  There were concerns with communications being disrupted as well as power grids.

Something that was seen as a once in a lifetime bonus were the possibilities of nighttime lighting displays not common so far south.

There were enough news stories letting people know that lights could be seen at night.

It would be necessary to get to a high enough elevation and hopefully get very little interference from residential lighting.

We had such a hill in Prospect, unfortunately we were not able to see anything other than the nightly stars.

In the Northwest area of the state, however, which is less populated, people were more fortunate, and they submitted their photos to our local newspaper, the Republican American.

The above story came with a story that had a true Mother's Day touch.

A woman took her young daughter to see the lights. The young girl said to her mother that she wished her deceased grandmother could see them as well. Simultaneously, and as they looked at the skies the lights had a heart shape to them while the mother explained to her daughter that her grandmother was looking at them from above.

Photos and partial story obtained from the Republican-American.

Some of the photos shared on Facebook have been incredible.  Here in Golden Valley on the south side, I did not have the opportunity to view any northern lights.

Ed, I have one item on my bucket list.  To see the Northern Lights.  And even this past weekend did not give me a 'check mark' next to that item, even though pictures were being shown of the lights from all around me.  I guess I will appreciate them more when I finally do see them.   M

Dear Ed,

I could not see them either. It was too cloudy. Only once have I seen northern lights in the lower 48.
