This Week…This Day

We are without internet or power after our storm (and tornado) on Thursday night.  And so, I’m working on my devices cobbled together with hotspots and crossed fingers.

However, I could not let this day pass without sharing the story of our good friend, Vic.

victor renza

Today our friend Vic is remembering what happened on May 18, 1967. (View the CBS special they did) He was in Viet Nam, and fresh out of high school. After he was shot in the back by the North Vietnamese Army, he had to lay there and play dead while the NVA sat a few feet away and ate their lunch. It was the next morning before he and the other survivors were rescued.

There were only 7 survivors that day.

He was there while his Sgt. called in artillery on top of his platoon...it was his only choice.

This was not just another day for Vic or the men in his Platoon.

Some of you weren’t even born yet. At the risk of giving away my age, I was graduating from high school that month.

But I knew about war and the horrible things that would happen to these young men and women.

I wish that no one ever had to go to war again. (and by the way, this is not a political statement whatsoever.)

But I hope those who are our future know that going to battle is more than what they see in movies. I hope that it is not what they see when they play a game on whatever device they have.

Some are attempting to rewrite history…people who weren’t even around. This is why it is important to have conversations with those who were there!

Thank you, to the many men and women who have served our great country.

Good morning, and I hope today sees the return of your power. I'm glad you are safe.

And I agree - war is horrible as can be seen by Vic's story. Thank you for sharing.

Good morning, Kathy... this is an amazing story. I was completing my freshman year at college on that day so Viet Nam war news is something I remember well. War is hell and we can only be thankful that there are brave Americans who are willing to live through that hell for us. They deserve all of our respect and thanks. May God bless them all.

Hopefully, you'll have power soon. Happy to hear that you are okay otherwise.

Hi Kathy,
I'm sorry to hear you are still without power.  Thanks for your post. War is horrible, but sometimes, when power and greed get out of control, you have to fight. Sadly, there will always be conflict

Having had a son in a conflict zone, I totally agree with you, especially as I look around the world and see so many using war/force to do what I wonder, gain more power. Too many lay down their lives for freedom, it is to be remembered how brutal war is always. I think anyone running for president should have served or have had a child who has served so they think twice before committing to war as a choice to resolve a conflict.

Kathy, cannot even imagine getting shot and having to "play dead" to survive.  Glad Vic did!   We do, give our thanks for their service EVERY DAY!

Good morning Kathy,

Oh No! You are still without power! My sister and brother-in-law live downtown Houston in a three story townhome and have damage. They do have a generator but with three holes in their roof, lots of rain came in the attic and into their third floor.

I love your story and there are so many  we need to hear. This business of rewriting our history has got to stop! We have a history and it makes us who we are and we learn from events so we know how to move forward as their will always be conflict.

That is quite the story and showed that it just wasn't his time. And at the risk of giving away my age I had a couple of years of college at the time.

I'm glad to hear you are safe, Kathy! That was some storm!

I can't with the minimizing of conflict and war. It's a horrible thing to have to endure. I can only begin to imagine how traumatizing this experience must have been for your friend. I speak as an ex-mil spouse who had to see her husband off twice. I was on edge for months on end, always fearing that knock on the door.

Nowadays, I anxiously follow the news overseas, where the possibility of a conflict spreading throughout Europe is no longer an obnoxious thought but a threat that becomes more real by the day. No, there's nothing pretty about it. How quickly (some) people forget.

This post grabs my heart and squeezes, Kathy. Without our guardians of freedom, our country would. No longer be free. Decisions being made at the top are threatening all Americans, especially our way of life!

p.s. Glad you and your family are safe. 🙏

Hi Kathy:

What a wonderful, heartfelt tribute to the many women and men who serve, and have served, our country.

Sorry about your power loss the other day but it sounds like all is well again...at least I hope so.
