Motivational Monday…Auntie Em!

It pays to be married to someone from Kansas who is familiar with tornadoes!  Thursday evening Houston and Cypress (where we are) had severe thunderstorms and tornado alerts. Cypress had an Ef-1 tornado confirmed hit not far from my niece’s home.

We could see the path as the storms headed directly our way.

As the storms approached, I gathered our devices, keys, purse, meds, etc, and put them in the closet with us.

Larry said “Let’s go in the closet NOW” as the winds, lightning, and rain picked up.

Everything passed quickly and at that time, while we had no power, we had our internet and a generator so we were able to watch our Houston Astros.

It’s Sunday afternoon and we still have no power or internet. I’m thankful that we have a generator!

(My friend's home in the country about an hour from us.
Thankfully the horses are ok.)

We’ve been able to use our phones as a hotspot, which is how I’m accessing the internet. Unfortunately, some of the channels we watch have to use our home wi-fi so I’m downloading the taped Astros games to my iPad and watching them that way.

What’s motivational about not having the “comforts of home?”

~People in my neighborhood came together with chainsaws and energy to remove trees and debris from one of our major streets.

~A good neighbor in a nearby community offered hamburgers and hot dogs this afternoon for anyone in need!

~A generous neighbor had reached out to help elderly neighbors and asked others to help. They both are on walkers.  Nearby neighbors helped.

~Those taking the time to post on Social Media about current power updates.

~Crews from out of state have been arriving in caravans to help restore power.

And, hey Rocky Dickerson, I got to go to Buc-ees for ethanol-free gas for our generator!!!

The list is long of the good deeds around our beautiful area. That’s enough to motivate me!

Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.

Hello Kathy - Auntie Em, Kansas and many areas of the country certainly come to the surface and your post brings thoughts of proper preparation to mind as well.  As each of us likely knows firsthand, disaster on any level, can happen anytime.  And anywhere.  Together, much can be accomplished.

The Helen Keller quote fits well into your message too.

Thank you Michael Jacobs when we moved in we decided where we'd go in a tornado. Larry's closet is on an internal wall. So we have two folding chairs in it along with a flashlight.

Good morning Kathy,

You really were luck with that storm that hit your area! I'm so glad to hear how helpful everyone is ..that's what crises are all about..lending a hand to friends and neighbors. That is the one thing about Texans they are first to offer help and support! Hope your power is restored soon.♥

Dorie Dillard Austin TX I agree about Texans. Always there to offer help. I feel sorry for those without a generator or power and who have no one they can stay with.

Good Morning Kathy Streib

So glad you and Larry are safe. Several years ago, when I was at a training in Dallas, while listening to the radio in a corporate apartment. The emergency broadcast system tone came on "This IS NOT a TEST! This IS NOT a TEST!" "If you are in (several counties were cited) take cover now" Not being from the Dallas area I had no idea what county I was in but I was west of Dallas. There was no placard in the apartment saying where I was. I ran down to the office but no one was there. "Where am I?"...lol.

That was the twister that broke in two and hit eastern Dallas and then Ft. Worth. Guess I wasn't in any of the counties listed...lol

wow Doug Dawes that has to be scary when you're in an unfamiliar city and something like that happens. I understand because we were in the Bahamas when Hurricane David came through.

Love the positivity and glad that all is ok!  Generators are a blessing even here in East TN when we lose power in the super cold snowy winters.  Thanks for sharing and have a fabulous Monday!

Norma J. Elkins Larry and I decided that we'd rather have no power in the warm weather because in the colder weather, we have to worry about pipes bursting.
