A Little Dirt Never Hurt

I remember years ago reading that my favorite food, peanut butter, was number one on the USDA's list of foods with the most allowed contaminates. I do not know if that holds true today or not but I was appalled at what they knowingly allow. I started with this search: What food pushes the limit of USDA amounts of contaminants? Then I clicked on "What does the FDA allow in food (top right) of the chart below:

Eventually I ended up at LIFESCIENCE and YUCK , what an eye opener. It's broken down into categories of what the USDA allows in our food. Here is just one category to ponder: Rodent Poop.

Consider the defect "mammalian excreta" a rather polite way for the FDA to tell you there's rodent poop in your food. The icky defect comes up 15 times in the FDA's handbook.

Fennel seeds, ginger and mace (a spice that's similar to nutmeg) can all contain up to an average of 3 milligrams of mammal poop per pound. For sesame seeds, the limit is a smidge higher: up to an average of 5 mg per pound.

And because the world can be a cruel place, cocoa beans can contain up to 10 mg of poop per pound.

I don't want to repeat the entire article but I've given you enough links to satisfy your curiosity if you want to know about some of the crap in our food supply. (BTW even human crap is allowed to some extent.)

Ignorance is bliss, sometimes, in nearly every life category.  If we really knew how "dirty" our government is, we wouldn't be able to sleep.

That is for sure Michael Elliott . When it comes to our food supply I do not know if any country is better but isn't it odd they are very precise? What if I like twice as much peant butter than the next guy... then do I go way over the line?

It's just amazing to me what they do allow Nina Hollander, Broker . I'm sure many of the yucky things allowed are cooked out when properly prepared.

When it comes to food processing it probably is best to not know, especially when it comes to food you like. Now if it was something I don't like such as pickles....

Inquiring minds want to know Bob "RealMan" Timm

Is the poop an additive or does it get into the food because the rodents poop in the food?

Either way, that is just CRAPPY!

I'm guessing it's from rodents getting into grain bins Kathleen Daniels, Probate & Trust Specialist but that doesn't explain human poop.

I agree Endre Barath, Jr. as Michael Elliott 's reply's are almost always in line with our thoughts. In reference to Michael's comment: If we really knew how "dirty" our government is, we wouldn't be able to sleep. I have to say that a certain trial that is being played out currently is a glaring example of just how dirty our government is.
