Tuesday’s Treasures…Little Boys and Their Toys

This was not the first time Larry used the generator, however in the past it was only for a few hours…maybe 6 at most.

Thanks to our recent weather event, we’ve had it up and running since Thursday night.

What an opportunity to experiment!!!

In 2021 after the snow and ice storm on Valentine’s Day, Larry decided it was time to get a generator.

He built a system using two large inverter/generators and wired them into our breaker box. This avoids having to keep a door or window open for the cord.

The “tinkerer” decided it was a good time to play with his “toy.”

The set up we have uses 2 inverters so we can use them together or use one. So since Thursday night, he’s been experimenting with using only one inverter for our needs. We had lights, television (but no internet) and everything else.

Today, using both inverters,he wanted me to run the washer and dryer at the same time, which I did and was successful!

He would have been a happy camper had we been able to watch the Astros in real time!

** Follow up…our power and internet were restored at 5:30 pm today!!!! You should have seen my happy dance!!!

The “gentle” hum of the generators on our street has been silenced.

The difference between men and boys is the price of their toys.

Good morning, Kathy... I never cease to be amazed by Larry's ingenuity. My husband has no toys and no skills in this regard. Maybe you can send Larry to our house. :)

Hello Kathy - I also like hearing things are back to the way they were at Casa Streib.  Author Robert Fulghum, All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten, is attributed with this quote that for me shows the power of perspective.  If you break your neck, if you have nothing to eat, if your house is on fire, then you got a problem.  Everything else is inconvenience.

Hi Michael Jacobs I couldn't agree more!  Yes, I missed having the internet and power but I also knew I had somewhere I could go (family) if I wanted. More importantly, we have our health!  Perspective can shine a bright light.

Hi Kathy,
What percentage of people in your area do you suppose don't have a generator? It would be horrible to be without power for so long.

Kathy Streib

Carol Williams I have no idea!  I know that three (at least) people on my block bought the whole house generator. I was surprised to hear that  someone was still able to buy a generator last Saturday.

Hi Kathy what an interesting post. Larry is one smart little boy grown up!  I must show Gary this post as he talks about from time to time getting a generator - just in case AC's go out in the summer. Pretty amazing work around!

Kathy I have a 10,000 watt Generac generator.  My house is all electric and it handles everything we need to have on at one time.  It is also wired into my electrical panel, and I have had to use for 5 days a couple of times.  One of the best purchases I have made.

May 21, 2024 10:52 AM

George Souto many people are getting the Generac. we don't have that but Larry wired ours into our panel so no wires coming into the house.

Glad to see you on the call today and to know you have your power back. Several people in our area have opted to install gas whole house generators to kick in automatically if there is a power cut.

Nick Vandekar, 610-203-4543 at least 3 of our neighbors have them. I'm glad we got one. What's funny is that we've had to use ours more here than we ever did in FL.

Hi Kathy:

How fortunate the decision was made about those generators. Larry certainly has skills that surpass mine. Glad to hear you have power again. From what I saw online it sounded like a pretty nasty series of storms with far reaching impact on thousands of people!

Jeff- it's one of the benefits of being married to a tinkerer! LOL He researched everything before building it.

We had two tornadoes and from what I understand the event was called a derecho

Kathy Streib  I have been battling Diane for ten years to get a generator.... the good news is we are so close to LAX as in Los Angeles International Airport, that we are on their grid, longest we were without power was 20 minutes in ten years, Endre

Endre Barath, Jr. we never had one in FL although we did go 3 days without power after one hurricane. Tell Diane they are worth the investment.

Yikes! You were without power for 4-5 DAYS? How awful! The generator certainly came in handy. I am very fortunate where I live as I rarely lose power. We are so spoiled to modern conveniences. Glad your power finally came back on.

May 22, 2024 06:55 AM

Pat Starnes-Front Gate Realty it was being without the internet that drove us nuts. Even though we had power via our generator and could use our iPhones as a hotspot, there were many channels we couldn't get without home wi-fi because of licensing agreements.

And YES, we are spoiled!

I don't handle being without power well. Not a fan at all.

That said...we have generator experience with all the camping we do. (when I say "camping" you know we have basically an entire home on wheels and we usually stay at sites with electric and water)

Rick has solar panels on the roof of the trailer and a generator as back up. I'll show him this post, I think he will appreciate it.

Sharon Tara sounds like my SIL's sister and her husband who use their RV if their power goes out. I did my camping 40 years ago and that's it!
