Enjoy Every Birthday, With Your Friends

Today is the birthday of a former business acquaintance who has always been a friend.  But lately, this friend became MIA.   So when I saw her birthday on Facebook, I posted Happy Birthday to her.  Thankfully another good friend saw this with an update.

After posting Happy Birthday to my friend Carole, another friend of hers posted that she'd be "visiting her."  Bringing a hint of curiosity, I asked her where Carole is for this birthday.  She informed me that sadly, Carole is now in a memory care facility.   This friend has cared for her for a very few years and she has recently begun a stay at a facility.

"Carole is too young!" I replied!  Goodness she isn't old enough to be in a memory facility.  I'm so sad about this.  It's a fact of life, none of us is getting older.  None of us is geting out alive.  But she is not old!

Doing a little research, I see that she is 76!  SEVENTY SIX!  She's not a whole lot older than lot of us.  It's a rude awakening when you lose site of someone that you don't speak to on a regular basis and then, bam they are gone!

Carole had a wonderful career as a press secretary for the Secretary of State's office in Arizona; a former radio DJ and lastly she had her own communications company.  It seems so odd that she would develop dementia as a former mass communications major at ASU.  And the last few years, Carole was a faithful member of  a networking group I co-founded.  She has the most infectious laugh!  Cheers to you Carole!

Carole, far right

Since she is in another state, I shared my birthday wishes with her friend.  Maybe that will spark a memory.  Maybe she'll enjoy her birthday.  I hope so.

Never take your friends or family for granted.  We are on this earth not nearly enough.  Enjoy each day and be thankful for this in your life who you call friends!

When I was in my teens, I thought 30 was old. Now I agree that 76 seems young!

As for your message, yes, we need to enjoy our friends and family while they (and we) are here. Because we just never know when our time here will end.

Jan- your post is so true. I cannot tell you the number of times I've gone to Facebook to wish someone a Happy Birthday only to discover that they are no longer with us. we have no idea how long any of us will have on this earth. It's important to take every chance we get to call or see our reach out in some way to our friends.

I appreciate your comment Endre Barath, Jr. as I have LOTS of acquaintances in real estate, as do you.  Carole is between a friend and an acquaintance.  We've volunteered together many times.  I knew she sold her house through Opendoor and that she was moving out of state, but she never said why.  Turns out she was moving in with a longtime friend in another state, which is the person that updated me.  So very sad.

You're very welcome Michael Elliott !  We all need a reminder now and then when we get our nose out of joint or simply take ourselves too seriously, me included.

You probably have more acquaintances than I do Wayne Martin !  Managing brokers run into so many coming and going in a  brokerage.  I bet you are highly regarded and popular!

Yes very sad Michael Jacobs !  As we age, those reminders happen more frequently unfortunately.  Thank you for stopping by!

So sad Nina Hollander, Broker !  My sister will be 76 next month so I get it.  She's a recent widow and it's sad to see her not being her usual strong self.  Argh - we should support each other at times like that!   Hugs Nina!

Thank you Dorie Dillard Austin TX .  Yes, her birthday did spark a memory.  The main photo is from a White Elephant event I hosted at my house.  She's seated far right.  Always with a fun laugh and a big smile, she was always the light in the room in our networking group.  I miss her being in the group, but it's good to know she's being cared for and in a good place.

Very true Kat Palmiotti .  We don't know when that date will exist after the dash!  I've tried to be more mindful and present when I'm around anyone else, versus just my friends.  Thank you for commenting!

So true Jeffrey DiMuria 321.223.6253 Waves Realty !  Being mindful to stay in touch is so important.  I'm hoping to put together a family reunion of cousins I haven't seen in many years as they live so far away.  Fingers crossed!

Thank you for commenting; you're too kind including this one in your weekly list of posts.  Thank you for that.  I hear ya.  More and more people are adding that date after the dash!

My dad was young in memory care. He passed last September but when he was there I appreciated his one friend, Elmer who visited him religiously.  Elmer passed before Dad did, which broke my heart.  Then it was just me who visited.  One thing you can consider is asking the friend who lives nearby to Facetime you with Carole.

I'm so sorry for your loss Melanie Bocock .  So very sad; and even sadder that your dad's friend passed first.  I'm not sure Carole would recognize me, but that's a great idea.  Thank you for following.  I followed back!

I remember when my brother-in-law's Dad was in a memory facility. It was a Veterans Hospital far from where they lived but it was the best place for him to be. His son would come and stay overnight with us and make a visit to see his Dad. He would tell us afterward that he was not sure his Dad even knew who he was. It was very sad. Dad has since passed.

I'm so sorry for you getting that kind of news and for your friend's condition. What a shocking piece of news to get. Dementia is a very cruel and painful experience for those who have it and for the people that love them. My dad has it. He is still living at home with my mom (she has very little mobility left) and my sister is full time caregiver for both of them. I don't know how much longer before a care facility is necessary. It is heartbreaking for all concerned.

That is very sad John Juarez .  You played a vital role in being there for your brother-in-law and his father.  I hope not to do that to my daughters and their families.  Thinking of those later years and how it will go down is depressing.  Let's live while we can!

I'm so sorry Sharon Tara!  Seeing your parents' decline and knowing that will continue must be so hard.  I can't imagine, literally, because all of my parents passed in their 60's.  Visiting my former mother-in-law before she passed gives me some idea.  But she was the rare bird that had all her mental faculties and never complained, about anything!  She was a great mentor and friend and I hope to mirror her attitudes when I get up that age!  We all could use that lesson.  Thank you for commenting and all the best to you and your parents!

Jan Green - Scottsdale, AZ   Thank you. Wow, your parents dying at such a young age. That is horrible. My heart goes out to you for that! The decline is horrible, the worst part is not being able to do anything about it.
