The Trail to the Top of Black Butte is Open!

Black Butte Trail Is Short But Steep

The trail to the top of Black Butte starts part way up the butte after a drive on a fairly well maintained dirt and gravel road followed by a poorly maintained dirt and rock road. Once you reach the trailhead (complete with stocked toilets), the two mile hike to the top of the butte can be accomplished fairly quickly.  Hikers gain over 1500 feet in the two miles, but the Cascade views from Broken Top to Mt Adams can be spectacular on a clear day.

There is limited parking at the Black Butte Trailhead (forest pass required) so hikers are recommended to arrive early to get a spot and to avoid crowds.  The hike is very popular with visitors to Black Butte Ranch and and Camp Sherman as well as local year-round residents.

I would love to make that ascension Lynnea Miller, and I could, but my lung power has greatly deminished and it may take twice as long as most other hikers.

Bob - there are people of many different athletic abilities climbing the butte - typically later in the day than us as we see them going up as we are going down.  But it isn't that long a hike, although steep.

Wow, this photo is magnificent!  There are so many beautiful spots in Oregon.  Last summer I enjoyed the area around Lakeside and visited a wonderful winery in the hills as well.  Reustles.  Enjoy your summer in temperate Oregon!

That sounds like a wonderful hike! Several of our hiking destinations are still covered by snow!

Hi Kat Palmiotti .  The high Cascades are still snow covered and probably will remain that way until at least the end of June.  We had a wet winter (great for our drought), but I am anxious to hike more in the mountains.

Hi George Souto .  I am so happy to get back into hiking in the woods and mountains.  I enjoy the winter hikes we take in the high desert, but there is nothing that beats the smell of the pine trees and views we get in the high Cascades.
