Thankful Thursdays…For Good People

You can always count on disasters to bring out the good that exists in people. And for that, I am grateful.

Why? I’m not grateful for the disasters but sometimes the “good” in people takes a backseat to whatever is happening in our lives.

This past week, I read or witnessed people willing to share what they had (water, food) with neighbors and strangers.

~Thank goodness for Social Media. Say what you will about Facebook and Nextdoor but I am thankful for my neighborhood group and the contributors who kept us informed.

People took their time to share updates…what gas stations had gas…what stores had ice…and how to handle the mosquitos.

~Thank you to the many who drove in from out of state to brave our traffic and humidity to assist our Centerpoint workers.

~And thank you to those who did not hide their humor, especially at a time when we all needed it.

Two favorites of mine…

“Has anyone else flipped the bathroom light switch a fazillion times in the last 4 days? No? Just me??”

“Neighbors we have LIGHTS!

If you see our house lit up like CHRISTMAS just know we deserve it.”

We can always find something to be grateful for!

I agree Michael Jacobs If we're looking for the positive we'll find it. And, of course, ti works the other way as well. seeking the negative, you'll find it as well.

yes Kat Palmiotti that's true. I spend an average of 5 minutes on Facebook daily but during the tornado and outage, I found it helpful.  It was often the only way to get any information.

Brian England that's exactly how I feel. This is why it's important to get the feel good stories out there.

Imagine if Facebook (as an example) saw themselves as a place for good. We would see a lot more of this.

Jeffrey DiMuria 321.223.6253 Waves Realty wouldn't that be nice? Sadly, no matter the platform, there is always someone who has to leave a snarky comment. However, I didn't see that many during the storm.

Sharon Tara Don't you love that!!!  After our power came back on, I was still cautious about turning on a light switch.

Thanks, Kathy, for sharing your power outage experience. Your posts have probably encouraged some of your readers to purchase a generator.

Take care and be safe.

Thank you Mark Don McInnes, Sandpoint-Idaho  I felt awful today when I saw my neighbor who is over 80. I didn't check on him because his sons live just minutes away. He and his wife do not have a generator but they stayed in their home. His children wanted them to stay with them but they chose to stay at home.

I should have gone over anyway.

Hi Kathy,
You are certainly right that hard times tend to showcase the good in people. We've had plenty of opportunities to witness this through all the Natural Disasters over the last many years, haven't we?

I so recognize the light switch issue as we had a light out in a high hallway and it took a few days for a family member to bring a long enough ladder to replace it.

Ed Silva, 203-206-0754  the funny thing is that even after the power was back on, I was cautious about turning on any lights.

The bad times DO tend to bring out the best in people will to help in spite of what they are dealing with. Sounds like social media was, in this case, very positive.

Jeff Dowler, CRS normally I go on Facebook to check out photos of my family and friends. But during natural disasters, etc, they do come in handy.   That's how I knew we would get power that night. Different sections of my neighborhood reported their power was back on.

Kathy Streib - sometimes in our darkest hours, finding humor to get through it all is the bright light that comes shining through in times when we are tested. I know you went through a lot in Houston. Glad to know you're okay and that some of the best people make bad situations the best neighbors and friends.

Patricia Feager, MBA, CRS, GRI,MRP Thank you. I know that there are people who did not have generators or another place to go. I feel bad for them. We're supposed to have a bad hurricane season this year so I hope they get the power grid taken care of.
